ALLOA boss Jim Goodwin reckons his side dominated their League One encounter with Peterhead despite slipping to defeat at the Indodrill Stadium last Saturday.

The Wasps were on top for most of the game, but Leighton McIntosh capitalised on a defensive error to give the Blue Toon all three points.

And the player-manager admitted that it just wasn’t his side’s day as they fell to a second successive home defeat.

Goodwin told Advertiser Sport: “We talked about trying to put a bit of pressure on Livingston but I don’t think the result was down to a lack of bottle or anything like that. I don’t think it played on the boys’ minds at all. We had well over 60 per cent of the possession and 16 corners to their one.

"If you look at the stats, we were the better team by a mile but the fact of the matter is, Peterhead got a sloppy goal from our point of view. They capitalised on our mistake and once they went in front, it gave them something to hang onto. In fairness to them, they saw the game out reasonably well.

"We threw everything at them in the last 15 minutes and had a number of opportunities, but it just wasn’t our day.”

Goodwin admitted that frustration was his overriding emotion following the defeat, and says he believes his side’s performance was their best for some time.

He said: “It was a day of frustration. In the first half we played as well as we have for weeks.

"We caused them problems and Kevin Cawley was getting in behind and making some great runs. We played well but we just didn’t work the goalkeeper enough. That was what we talked about at half time. We were definitely the better team and dominated the game but that counts for nothing.

"It is the result that matters. We have dropped points so unfortunately we have to go back to the drawing board.”

The Wasps boss insists his players will pick themselves up and says they are looking forward to Saturday’s Scottish Cup clash with local rivals Dunfermline.

Goodwin added: “We were terrible last week against Stranraer, yet came away with a 2-1 win, and we have played really well against Peterhead and come away with nothing.

"That is the league we are in unfortunately, and we have to pick ourselves up. We have a good game against Dunfermline to look forward to, and although we will be the underdogs going into that, it is a game we will fancy ourselves in. We believe we can progress in the competition.”
