NEW Alloa signing Stefan McCluskey is aiming high following his arrival at the Indodrill Stadium.

The forward was unveiled as Jim Goodwin’s second signing of the January transfer window today and has already revealed that his aim is to finish top of the pile at the end of the season.

And despite the current nine-point gap to leaders Livingston, the new arrival reckons it can all change between now and the end of the campaign.

McCluskey told Advertiser Sport: “I am here to try and win the league. Second place gets you nowhere in this league. You have got to win it. I won it with Morton so I know what it takes. It always goes right to the wire and although there are nine points in it, that can change in a couple of weeks so it is just a matter of trying to bridge the gap to Livingston.”

The 26-year-old joins having departed League One rivals Peterhead back in November, and although he was offered a deal by Championship side St Mirren, McCluskey was convinced signing on with the Wasps was the right move.

He said: “I was in training with St Mirren and they offered me a contract, but I am working full-time so when Jim contacted me and told me about what he and the management team are trying to do, I was keen straight away. I’ve played here and scored a few times so I’m hoping to continue that. Hopefully I can chip in with a few at the other end now.”

The former Morton man goes straight into the squad for Saturday’s Scottish Cup clash with Dunfermline, and he reckons his new side have what it takes to secure their place in the draw for the fifth round.

McCluskey added: “I couldn’t have picked a harder game to come in for but you just never know, especially in the cup. When it’s a one-off game like that it can go either way, and it just depends who wants it more. If we go out there on Saturday and show enough desire to win the game we will win it. It’s as simple as that.”
