JIM Goodwin says his players are brimming with confidence after they picked up their third league victory in 10 days on Tuesday evening.

Alloa swept East Fife aside, scoring three without reply at the Indodrill Stadium, and Goodwin was delighted with what he saw.

And the Wasps boss hailed the quality of his side’s goals as they narrowed the gap at the top of the table to six points.

Goodwin told Advertiser Sport: “I am obviously really pleased. The last time we got three wins in a row was way back at the start of the season. You could see in the game that the boys were full of confidence, and once we weathered the storm early on there were some fantastic passages of play. East Fife started better but after that, we dominated for long spells. The quality of all three goals was excellent.”

The manager once again hailed his defence, which has become one of the meanest in the country in recent weeks, and praised goalkeeper Craig McDowall, who marked his half-century of appearances for the club with a clean sheet.

He said: “I hate singling people out but I thought the centre-backs were outstanding once again. Calum Waters and Scott Taggart were also very good. The attacking players take a lot of the limelight but the job the guys at the back do is absolutely immense. They are extremely brave and put their bodies on the line. Craig McDowall deserves great credit as well because he stepped in when Neil Parry got injured and has done very well. I am so fortunate to be able to call on a goalkeeper like him who would probably be number one at any other club.”

The Wasps are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Brechin, and Goodwin admitted his players would have to adapt to the conditions at Glebe Park.

He added: “I say it every week but every game is as important as the next one. We try not to get too carried away and take each game as it comes. We will work hard to make sure our game plan and tactics are right for Saturday.

"The pitch is not ideal by all accounts as I think it is pretty boggy up there, so that is something we will have to consider. We might not be able to play the kind of football we enjoy playing but we will adapt. We have adapted to all kinds of situations and we will do it again. Brechin will be another tough opponent and they had a great result against Queen’s Park, so we are well aware of how difficult the task will be. But the boys are in a great frame of mind and we look forward to the game.”
