TWO-GOAL hero Iain Flannigan reckons Alloa’s thumping of Brechin is the sort of result the Wasps have been threatening to produce for several weeks.

Flannigan and his teammates have endured a frustrating period, drawing at home with Albion Rovers and Queen’s Park before losing to Livingston.

But the midfielder is delighted to get back to winning ways and praised his side’s performance as they ran out 6-1 winners.

Flannigan told Advertiser Sport: “That sort of result has been coming for a while now. If you take the games against Queen’s Park and Albion Rovers, they were very frustrating because we created a number of chances and had opportunities to put the games to bed, but we just couldn’t manage it. It was important that we bounced back from the disappointment of losing to Livingston last week and I think we did that. Everyone put in a good performance from start to finish.

“We didn’t have a weak link in the team. It was a great performance from start to finish. We kept the tempo high and that’s important for us, because when we do that we tend to create a lot more chances and win more games.”

Flannigan found the net with two superb strikes, taking his tally for the season to eight from midfield, and he says he is happy with how the squad have chipped in with goals from all over the pitch.

He said: “It’s always nice to get on the scoresheet. I would have been under a bit of pressure if I had missed the free kick because it was definitely in Calum’s territory! Thankfully it went in, which I was delighted about, and it capped off a good afternoon’s work.

“There was a lot of clinical finishing from around the team. In the last two home games we have probably created a similar amount of chances and just not taken them, but we were clinical today.

“We have been good this season in terms of chipping in with our fair share of goals. There are goals right through the team. It’s not just the strikers who have been scoring, the share has been fairly spread out throughout the whole squad.”

Last Saturday’s victory confirmed that Alloa will finish the season in second place, but despite that Flannigan insisted there will be no let-up as the Wasps look to build up a head of steam before the promotion playoffs.

He added: “Although that is us in the playoffs now we want to keep the momentum going. We will be back in this week and we’ll train hard. We are fully focused on the remaining three games. We have three tough games left but we set our own standards and we will just focus on a game at a time.”
