IAIN FLANNIGAN praised Alloa’s character after they dug deep to claim their first victory of the season with a win over Queen’s Park.

The midfielder admitted that the visitors made it difficult for his side as they endured a frustrating afternoon before their 85th minute winner.

But the former Partick Thistle and Kilmarnock man reckons the Wasps were rewarded for their patience as they took the chance to climb the League One table.

Flannigan told Advertiser Sport: “We started well but fell out of the game – Queen’s Park reacted well to our start.

"But we showed a good level of resilience. The boys showed a lot of character to keep plugging away. We knew how important it was to get the win.

“Queen’s Park were really well organised. We knew how they would set up and it was up to us to break them down.

"They made it difficult for us but we knew that if we kept plugging away the goal would eventually come.

“I think we deserved the win, although they had a couple of chances. It was very tight but that’s the way a lot of games are going to be this season.

"You have to be patient in that sort of game because it’s very easy to let frustration get the better of you.”

Adam Martin was the man of the moment, producing a stunning strike to win the game with just five minutes to go, and Flannigan reckons the 19-year-old is one to watch for the future.

He said: “Adam did brilliantly. He has got a good attitude, which is especially important when you’re young.

"You have to put the hours in and he does that, so we are delighted that his hard work is paying off. He is starting to make more of an impact, and I’m sure there’s plenty more to come from him.”

Flannigan now believes the Wasps are in a much better position going into Saturday’s clash with Airdrieonians having already picked up their first win of the campaign, but says the North Lanarkshire side will still prove a difficult prospect for his side.

He added: “I don’t think there’s a lot between ourselves and Airdrie. They have lost a couple of players from last season but they will still give us a tough test.

"It’s vital that we go and apply ourselves on the day. It’s a lot better to be going into it after a victory.”
