ALLOA boss Jim Goodwin was full of praise for his side’s character after their comeback win over Queen’s Park at Hampden last Saturday.

The Wasps fell behind just after half time, but responded straight away, claiming three vital points in the race for the playoffs.

And the manager reckons team spirit helped his players over the line at the national stadium.

Goodwin told Advertiser Sport: “We have come from behind a lot of times this season so you can see the character and team spirit is there in abundance.

"I know the boys are capable of responding and they did that again on Saturday, almost as soon as the goal went in.

“I can’t fault the players at all. They have been absolutely fantastic in going from beating Arbroath on Tuesday and backing that up with a win over a well-organised and hard-working Queen’s Park team.”

Goodwin hailed the quality of Alloa’s two goals, claiming that Jordan Kirkpatrick’s winner would be shown on repeat if he had produced his wonder strike at a higher level.

He said: “The two goals were fantastic. The build-up to the first goal was of real high quality, and then the second was out of this world.

"It was deserving of winning any game of football, and if it was one of the big boys scoring it live on TV, they’d be showing it over and over again.

“Jordan doesn’t score many bad goals. They tend to be memorable, but that’s right up there with his best for the club.

"The balance and skill he showed to get away from the defenders was excellent. For it to be the winner makes it even better.”

The manager rested several key players including Steven Hetherington and Ross Stewart during last Saturday’s victory, but he insisted the decision to leave them out was purely precautionary.

Goodwin added: “Stevie Hetherington wasn’t able to train on Thursday because of a calf problem and Ross Stewart just felt a little bit tight towards the end of the Arbroath game.

"If we were down to the bare bones I would have risked them, but I’m not in a position just now where I need to do that.

"Both players were fit but with the strength in depth available, I felt I could protect them a bit. I don’t want anybody getting injured at this stage of the season, so we’ve got to manage the squad as best we can.”
