BIRTHDAY boy Kevin Cawley couldn't help Alloa to victory over Airdrieonians, despite getting on the scoresheet at the Indodrill Stadium.

The attacking midfielder turned 29 on the day of the game and celebrated in style as he put his side 2-1 up in the first half.

But the Wasps were pegged back by the side from North Lanarkshire and had to settle for a draw.

Cawley told Advertiser Sport: "Overall I'd say a draw was a fair result, but if we'd started the second half better it would have been a different game.

"We just couldn't get going after half time. You can only stop so many attacks, and they eventually got their goal.

"We will probably need to address that because it's not the first time that's happened. It's happened a few times this season.

"In the first half it could have been a lot more than 2-1. If it had been three or four at half time I think we would have deserved it. Neil Parry kept us in the game with the penalty save at 1-1 so it could have swung the other way. But we needed to take our chances and be a bit more clinical.

"The penalty was a crucial time because it would have put them in the lead. At that point it probably came against the run of play as well.

"Neil's save kept us in the game at that point. He was relieved after giving it away and said at the time it was a defender's tackle."

Despite his disappointment at the result, Cawley was delighted to be back on the scoresheet after netting his sixth goal of the season, and his first since December.

He said: "It's good to get back on the scoresheet because I've not scored in a while. My last goal was away at Raith. I want to try and hit double figures for the season.

"Overall, everyone has been chipping in and I think if we get more goals we will be alright for making the playoffs."

Alloa are still battling to clinch their place in the League One playoffs, but Cawley reckons they will be just fine if they continue to pick up points steadily.

He added: "Stranraer, Airdrie and East Fife are all still in with a shout. I don't think it will go down to the wire because I think we'll secure our place before the end of the season, but we just need to take it one game at a time and keep racking up the points."
