CALLUM SMITH couldn’t hide his delight after netting his first Alloa goal against Arbroath last Saturday.

The on-loan Dunfermline youngster’s first-half header kick-started a stunning comeback which saw the Wasps recover from falling 2-0 down to win 3-2.

And the teenager is hopeful that his crucial strike can be the start of a purple patch as his side look to seal their place in the League One playoffs.

Smith told Advertiser Sport: “Scoring obviously feels brilliant. It’s great to get my first goal for the club. Hopefully, there’s many more to come between now and the end of the season.

“There aren’t many games left but we’ve managed to lift ourselves into a good position in the playoff places. I’m hoping I can go and get myself a few goals.”

Smith’s maiden Alloa goal came a mere four minutes after Arbroath had doubled their lead, and the striker reckons getting back into the game so quickly was crucial.

He said: “We made two quite bad mistakes for Arbroath’s goals and we needed a reaction from the boys. I managed to score a decent header and that got us back in the game.

“It was really important for us to get that goal so quickly after Arbroath’s second. It was vital that we got back into it before half time.

"Jordan Kirkpatrick scoring just before half time was really important as well. After that we knew we’d go on to win the game if we didn’t make any more mistakes.”

The 18-year-old has been impressed with the Wasps’ battling spirit, and believes that could help them mount a late charge for second place in League One.

Smith added: “Ever since I’ve been here the team spirit has been brilliant. All the boys are brilliant and we all work hard in every game. We always battle to the very end and that gets results.

“We’re in a great position just now and we could maybe even push for second place. You never know what could happen. We are doing brilliantly just now so we are just hoping to keep that going.”
