Allan Maitland plans to use the club's upcoming games to prepare for the season opener.

ALLOA Athletic manager Allan Maitland plans to use the club's two upcoming cup games as preparation for the league opener away to Livingston.

The Wasps travel to Dens Park a week on Saturday to face Dundee in the Challenge Cup before taking on East Stirling in the League Cup on 31 July.

Maitland told Advertiser Sport, "My number one priority at the moment is the Dundee game, I need to have a team in mind for that one from the squad of players we have."

He added, "We will use these cup ties to prepare for the start of the new league - but we also want to win them."

The Wasps were in action in Oban at the weekend against top SPL sides, including Scottish Cup holders Dundee United - who won the roundrobin event, as their pre-season preparations stepped up a gear.

On the day, Alloa managed one win, against hosts Oban Saints, but failed to emulate their success of last year when they won the event.

That mattered little to the Wasps gaffer though, who was more interested in using the games to cast an eye over some of his new signings.

"Playing in Oban has improved everybody's fitness levels," Maitland said. "It also allowed me to see how the new guys who have come in are doing and gave me the chance to try out different systems."

The squad stayed over in Oban on Saturday night to give everyone the chance to bond and Wasps defender Scott Walker said it was a great occasion.

He continued, "All the guys had a really good time. Allan Maitland and James Ward have brought in not just really good players but great people, who are gelling well with the guys who are already here. We had a meal in the hotel then watched the Germany game together, it was a good laugh."

Alloa's pre-season continues this Saturday when they host Sauchie Juniors.
