Jim Lister celebrates his late winner against East Fife.
ALLOA Athletic manager Allan Maitland is calling on his players to build on their good start to the season when they take on local rivals Stenhousemuir.
The Wasps have picked up four points from their opening two games and scored six goals into the bargain to leave them sitting in fourth spot in Division Two.
Speaking after Saturday’s home win against East Fife, Maitland said, “The result against East Fife makes the start of the season for me a great one - now we can look forward to the Stenhousemuir game and hopefully build on that.”
The Warriors will provide a stern test for this new look Alloa side, though. They have also enjoyed an unbeaten start to their league season after following their opening day win against Peterhead with a creditable draw at Brechin last time out.
Wasps assistant manager, James 'Wardie’ Ward, told the Advertiser Sport, “We are expecting a very hard game against Stenny. They gave us a really hard time of it when we played them last term.”
He added, “We are happy with our start this season. It was important to follow the opening day draw away to Livingston with a win against East Fife at the Recs and we did that.”
Alloa have no injuries to report ahead of the game.
After the Stenny game, the focus of everyone at the club will turn to the next Tuesday’s mouthwatering Co-operative League Cup encounter with SPL Aberdeen at Recreation Park.
The sides last met - in the Scottish Cup - two seasons ago, when the Dons secured a narrow 2-1 victory at the Recs.
Alloa performed well in that game and were unlucky not to earn themselves at least a replay.
Aberdeen are a changed side since then.
They have a new manager at the helm in former Reds legend Mark McGhee, and in recent signing Paul Hartley boast a Scotland international with Champions League experience.
“We are delighted with the draw. Allan Maitland more than most as he is a Dons fan,” Ward said.
“We’ll just have to make sure he goes into the right dug out.”
He added, “It will take the best performance we can give and for them to be just below par if we are to cause an upset, so it will be difficult, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.
“The players are looking forward to it - it’s a break from the league - and it gives them a chance to measure themselves against SPL opposition.”
