CROCKED Wasps star Brown 'Bomber’ Ferguson insists Alloa’s new look side boasts the quality to beat Ayr United on Saturday.
The midfield maestro reckons gaffer Allan Maitland’s summer signings have bolstered the squad and believes they will have the edge when Brian Reid’s side visit Recreation Park.
He told the Advertiser Sport, “Ayr are one of the bigger clubs in the league and have a big support. It will be a tough game but we have a lot of quality in our side.
“We need to win at home, especially against teams like Ayr, who will likely be up there challenging come the end of the season, and it is important we get the three points on Saturday.”
Brown, who has been on the sidelines because of a persistent knee problem, said Alloa’s defeat at Brechin before the international break made what had been a very good start a decent start.
He continued, “Up until that performance the players had been gelling well - you have to remember there are a lot of new faces, but this is a strong squad.”
Ayr got their season off to a poor start losing at home to Brechin City on the opening day but have steadied the ship since then with two draws and a win to leave them sitting in seventh spot in Division 2 on five points, two behind Alloa
Reid’s side lost to Partick Thistle in the quarter finals of the Alba Cup at the weekend and will be determined to get things back on track against Alloa.
They brought in veteran goalkeeper Alan Main as a trialist for their last two league games to cover for suspended ex-Wasp David Crawford, and the former St Johnstone man’s displays could see the 42-year-old win a permanent contract at Ayr.
Regardless of who pulls on the number one shirt on Saturday though, in strikers Bryan Prunty and Jim Lister, Alloa have the firepower to score goals against any team in the third tier of Scottish football.
Brown hopes to be back in contention for the first team when Ayr United next visit Recreation Park in January, which will be welcome news to all fans of the boys in black and gold.
The combative midfielder was on crutches after his last operation three months ago but has been off them for six weeks and is set to see the surgeon on Monday to find out when he can begin running again.
He admitted it has been hard going but said Alloa physio Jim Law has been great in helping him on the road to recovery.
Brown added, “I still have a lot of work to do but there is much more movement in my leg and I don’t think it will be too much longer before I’m back running.
“My aim is to be back in the team by the end of the year.”
