Alloa boss Paul Hartley has made his first signing of the January transfer window with the loan signing of Hibernian striker Ross Caldwell until the end of the season.

The highly-rated Easter Road 20-year-old, who trained with his new team mates at Recreation Park on Thursday night, goes straight into the squad for the game against Queen of the South at Palmerston Park.

Hartley is hopeful that the talented youngster can solve the Wasps current woes in front of goal.

He said, “Ross has come in and joins us for the rest of the season. He trained with us on Thursday night and he looked sharp. The window is what it is, we have been trying our best to get players in and now we have got young Ross in, so I am sure he will do well for us for the rest of the season. Ross is a great addition for us, he has scored in an Edinburgh derby, he is still young and has done well at the Under 20s level. He also has a great ratio in terms of goals to appearances in the first team so we are looking forward to working with him.” Caldwell scored a famous winning goal for Hibs in a 2-1 Edinburgh derby win over Hearts back in May 2013 and the Wasps boss is hoping he produce the same for him in the Scottish Championship.

Hartley said, “It is up to him now because we have given him the opportunity to go and show what he can do and I am sure he will do well because of his presence and he has a fantastic touch. You can never tell how a player is going to do at this level. It is great to have him in because we definitely need someone else up front so we hope he can come in and link up well with Andy Kirk and Kevin Cawley.” Alloa have been struggling for numbers in recent weeks as injuries, suspensions and illness have taken them to the limits of their squad and the gaffer is still hoping to add one or two new faces before the end of January.

He added, “It is a difficult time to get players in so we are delighted to have Ross on board. We are still looking to bolster the squad and I will try to get one or two more players in before the window closes.”
