Alloa star Daryll Meggatt hopes he can have a repeat performance to help his side shock title contenders Hamilton Accies when the two teams clash at New Douglas Park this weekend.

The former Queen’s Park defender scored the winner in a 1-0 win over Alec Neil’s men the last time they met in Lanarkshire and he is confident that the Wasps can put on another bold showing.

The 24-year-old (Pictured right) also reckons his side have no fears over facing the top three in their final few games because the onus is now on Cowdenbeath to catch them.

Meggatt told Advertiser Sport, “We have the top three teams in the league coming up now and Cowdenbeath will be banking on us losing them all but I think that is the games where we have had our best performances this season. Obviously it is Hamilton up next and we have beaten them twice already so we know we can do it but then they beat us here last time out so we know it will be a tough game. Obviously I have great memories of the last time we played at New Douglas Park when I scored the winner and hopefully I can do that again. This win is a whole weight off our shoulders, everything is on Cowdenbeath in terms of pressure, we can now just enjoy our last three games but I am sure we can still keep picking up points and it is now up to the teams below to catch us.We look forward to our last three games now, obviously all three teams will come at us because they are fighting it out for the league but I know we are capable of causing a few upsets.” The Wasps defender admits the 2-0 win over Morton was a vital three points for the club because it heaped all the pressure they have had in recent weeks onto the shoulders of Jimmy Nichol’s men who now cannot afford to lose another game. The win means Alloa opened up a seven point advantage on their relegation rivals but Meggatt warned his team mates that they cannot rest easy until they are officially safe.

He said, “This was a massive win for us and we knew beforehand just how big a game it was for us. We needed these three points because we wanted to keep our fate in our own hands. We have the win now and with Cowdenbeath losing as well it means we can breathe easier. This takes us up to seventh now and although Raith have a game in hand, it means they are involved and we would much rather have the points on the board. We will take nothing for granted until we are mathematically safe but this is a massive step towards it now.” The consistent young defender put in a man-of-the-match display during their victory last weekend and despite playing in a new position, he insists he is happy to play wherever he is needed for the rest of the season.

Meggatt added, “I am comfortable playing at centre back or at left back - it doesn’t bother me - I was just pleased to come in and do a job for the team. I thought we were dominant in the game and dealt with everything they had to throw at us. I thought we were on top for the majority of the first half but then let them back into things just before the break.

“The second half was one way traffic though and we were delighted to get a clean sheet. We had a few injuries with Liam Lindsay and Jason Marr both missing from defence but that’s just part and parcel of football and we just have to get on with it.”
