Wasps goal hero Kevin Cawley reckons they can now have a huge say in the outcome of the SPFL Championship title race after their 2-0 win over Greenock Morton last weekend.

The Alloa striker opened the scoring with his eighth goal of the season to put his side on their way to victory and he is hoping that they can now head into their remaining games full of confidence.

Barry Smith’s side travel to face title-chasing Hamilton Academical this weekend and their joint top-scorer believes they have the quality to upset their hosts.

Cawley told Advertiser Sport, “Next week will be a tough one for us because Hamilton drew at the weekend so we know they will come at us as they look for a better result. We are all confident now and this has given us a big boost to take into our final fixtures. We always seem to do well against the bigger teams and we have taken a lot of points from all three of them so we have nothing to fear from them.

“We know Hamilton will come out all guns blazing at us because they have fallen behind in the title race but we beat them there last time out and I see no reason why we can’t do it again. We know that even in our last defeat by them that we shot ourselves in the foot that day with a crazy opening ten minutes so we are all determined to go and put that right at the weekend.

“We go there looking to win the game but if we can grab a point that would be brilliant too. It is funny that we could end up having a massive say in the title race and that is something else to motivate us to do well in these games. This was a massive win for us especially off the back of three straight defeats.” Cawley admits that their victory over Greenock Morton may prove to be crucial in their fight to avoid the SPFL Championship relegation playoff but he has warned that they are not over the line just yet.

The 26-year-old was delighted to return to goalscoring form in the match but says it was a team effort that sealed the win.

He said, “We knew we had to bounce back with a win and obviously try to pull away from Cowdenbeath because we knew it would be a tough game for them up at Dundee. Although the gap is now seven points, we are not quite there yet and there is still three games to go and nine points still to play for. I was delighted to get on the scoresheet once again but the most important thing was that we defended well, worked hard as a team and you saw that in our performance.

“I don’t think we had a bad performer out there. There were a few players missing for this game but we dug in and fought for each other to come out on top. I felt like I haven’t played as well as I can since Christmas time but I know that if I work hard and do the basics well then I will get there.

“I felt a lot better about my performance in this one. We have a little bit of breathing space but we know we are not there yet and there is still three games to go.” The victory saw Alloa climb up to seventh in the table and their popular hitman hopes they will now look to finish as high as they can with a few ‘interesting’ games on the horizon.

Cawley added, “There are a few good games to come and obviously Paul Hartley’s return in a few week’s time in particular will be interesting. The middle section of the league is still tight in there so we know if we finish strong that we can still achieve a decent finish in the table.”
