Alloa boss Barry Smith has made his fourth signing of the summer and it is another familiar face for the Recreation Park faithful after former star Greig Spence sealed his return to the club on Tuesday evening.

The former Wasps youngster rejoins after leaving to join Celtic back in 2009 and the manager hopes his familiarity with his surroundings will help him to hit the ground running.

Spence had a prolific two-year spell in Fife with Raith Rovers and his new boss hopes that will stand the striker in good stead for the season ahead.

Smith told Advertiser Sport, “Greig Spence is a player who is hungry to go and do well after a decent spell with Raith Rovers so we are delighted to be able to bring him back to the football club. He is still only 21-years-old and is someone with a good scoring ratio at this level, so hopefully he can do well for us.

“A big factor in Greig coming back is that he knows the club well, they gave him a good grounding in the game and I am sure he will want to do well again at the club this time around. The fans I am sure will enjoy the fact that he is coming back to the club because he is a local lad and played at such a young age at the club.

“I don’t want to add any extra pressure onto him but I know he will add goals to the team and he is coming into play a vital role for us this season. We need to be scoring goals from all over the pitch though and hopefully the likes of Cawley, McCord and Weatherston can all chip in their fair share again like they did last season.” Smith says the excitement is now building at the club as the squad all return to begin preseason training this Thursday but he insists he will not allow his players’ minds to start drifting towards their games against the big three.

He said, “Obviously those games are the ones everyone wants to talk about but we have to play them all four times and it doesn’t matter the order. We just have to make sure we prepare for each game as it comes. All I am focusing on is Queen of the South away as our first league game but we have to be ready for the two cup games before that too.

“QoS away is a tough start but then they are all tough games next season so there is no point is singling out particular games or when we play the big three. “We are looking forward to it now. No one ever likes preseason but you always “look forward to it because it is about getting back into the groove and preparing for what is ahead.

“Everyone wants to make sure they are in the team for that first competitive game and this year especially.

“We hope to build on the confidence of last season, we have kept the majority of the squad and I am adding players I think will make the squad better.

“We will look to have a good preseason and take that confidence into the new season.” The Wasps gaffer is still keen to add more quality to his squad before the start of the season and says he will continue to search for new talent in the coming weeks.

Smith added, “We are still talking to a few more players, and I still believe we need to add a bit more strength and depth to the squad for what will be a long, hard season for us.”
