Returning Wasps hero Greig Spence says he is ‘over the moon’ to be back and now wants to repay the fans who helped launch his career as a teenager five years ago.

The 21-year-old made his mark at Recreation Park aged just 16 in a whirlwind six months with the club that saw him land a big money move to Celtic and he now believes it is the perfect place to continue his progression as a player.

The former Raith striker also revealed how he snubbed a new one-year deal at Starks Park to return to Alloa.

Spence told Advertiser Sport, “I am delighted and over the moon to be back at Alloa. When the opportunity to come back arose, it was one that really excited me and so I am delighted to sign.

“Raith offered me another year full time on a decent contract but I just wanted to come to a place where I would get a fairer crack of the whip.

“It is a chance for more game time and that was the only disappointing thing for me last season. That was one of the main reasons I have chosen to come back.

“Over the past two seasons I have scored 26 goals at this level despite not really ever being first choice striker.

“I am still only 21, I am still learning all the time and hopefully with more game time I can kick on with 15/20 goals this season.

“I know Alloa really well and people all ready know what I am all about since I have been at the club. I think that was part of the season for me to get back to basics and go to a club that really works for me.

“I am pleased to be back playing for the supporters because they were great with me when I was here as a young boy and they supported me every step of the way. Many of them have even followed my progress and I would love to repay them with a few vital goals this year.” Spence has been impressed by the professionalism of the club under new boss Barry Smith and also reckons that being relegation favourites may actually work in their favour.

He said, “Everything with the manager so far has been so professional and from the moment I spoke to him I knew I wanted to play for him.

“He sold himself and the club so well and I have the utmost respect for him.

“I reckon it is probably in our favour that people see us as relegation favourites.

“We like being the underdogs and it means we can go week to week with no pressure on us and just play our football.” The Dunfermline native says the club can have no fears as they prepare to face some of the biggest names in Scottish football in an exciting SPFL Championship season.

Spence added, “I don’t think there is anything to fear especially from the teams who will supposedly be in about us in the table and I think we may surprise a few.

“As a footballer you want to be playing in the big games at the big stadiums and that is where you have to produce your very best performance.

“The whole dressing room is positive about the season ahead and I don’t see why we can’t do well.”
