Alloa star Michael Doyle has opened his heart on his summer of turmoil and why, when it comes to chasing his dream of full time football, there is no better place to be next year than Recreation Park.

The 22-year-old enjoyed spells with Celtic and Kilmarnock before eventually joining the Paul Hartley revolution in Clackmannanshire and admits he has always had the ambition to get back to full time football from his first day with the club.

Now he is ready to repay boss Barry Smith and the Wasps fans for welcoming him back with open arms and giving him a shot at some of Scotland’s biggest clubs in the SPFL Championship next season.

Doyle told Advertiser Sport, “I had a chance of going full time over the summer so I owed it to myself to at least go after it because I have always said from day one coming here that my goal was to get back into full time football. As soon as I realised it wasn’t quite going to pan out that way then I knew there was only one place to be and that’s here at Alloa.

“I have been here since I was a teenager and so it feels like a second home to me and it is like a close knit family here at Alloa. Barry Smith has been brilliant with me and respectful of my ambitions but he always knew I would be back if things didn’t work out full time. I would never have gone to another part-time club and I was true to my word. The fans have been great with me in letting me feel wanted over the whole summer and hopefully I can repay them on the pitch. I am now in training with the young full time apprenticeship lads now, I will do that for the whole season and hopefully it will help me gain that extra edge going forward.

“To play in this league as well next year is a massive draw for any player. It is a huge platform to play the likes of Hearts, Hibs and Rangers in front of big crowds. A good season here and who knows what can happen. From the minute I got back amongst all the boys, I knew this was where I wanted to be again and hopefully we can have a good season.” Doyle believes that despite not having one of the smallest squads in the league, Alloa are no forlorn hope in the SPFL Championship this year and the strong bond of a team that has been together for four years will give them an edge.

The talented right-back knows he has a fight on his hand for a starting berth after an impressive pre-season from Jonathan Tiffoney but believes the whole team will thrive with the competition for places this term.

He said, “I know I will have to fight for my place with Jonathan but I am not the type to shy away from that. I feel it is better to have that competition for places as player to push yourself to limit.

“We know we are not the biggest club in the world so we can’t have a squad of 30 or 40 like Hearts, Rangers and Hibs, but what we do have is a good core of players who have been together for four years now.

“The manager has managed to keep almost all of us here so when it comes to fighting for points and standing up and being counted we know we have the players who will do that.” One team in particular sticks out for the popular fans’ favourite after he was sent off in a 7-0 capitulation the last time the Wasps met Rangers at Ibrox two seasons ago and he admits it is a game he would love to make amends for.

Doyle added, “We cannot wait for the league to start now but we have two tough cup games to get through before that.

“Obviously, the Rangers games are the ones I am looking out for because I was sent off against them last time we played so hopefully this time around I can play well or at least last longer than 70 minutes and make some happy memories to remember.”
