GOAL hero Greig Spence reckons his four strikes in the first two games of the season is his best-ever start to a campaign after his latest effort dumped Alloa’s bitter rivals Stirling Albion out of the League Cup at Recreation Park last weekend.

The former Raith hitman believes the Wasps will reap the rewards of his quick start after being frustrated on the substitutes bench at his previous clubs for the last few seasons.

The in-form striker is now hoping to hit double figures as soon as possible before moving on to his own high goalscoring targets.

Spence told Advertiser sport, “I always set myself a target of 10 goals by Christmas and then try to get to 20 by the end of the season.

“I have done that the last few years so this is a good start for me and hopefully I can get there. This is one of my best starts but then when I was at Raith I never really started much at the beginning of the season so I am just happy for the manager to get me my chance here.

“The three goals last week have really kicked me on in terms of confidence. For the last few years, I have always had good pre-seasons but then never got the opportunity to start with whatever team I have been with.

“This time I have had a great start, the club has got me really fit and have given me the chance to go and show what I can do so I am happy with that.” Spence admits the Wasps were relieved to come through a competitive derby match in some horrendous weather conditions at the Recs on Saturday but the 22-year-old also reckons his side have room for improvement ahead of a tough trip to Queen of the South as the league campaign begins this weekend.

He said, “We are looking forward to the Queen of the South game now because our main priority this season has to be the league.

“There is no point in us doing well against lower league opposition in the cups and then not turn up in the league.

“We have to go and look to turn it on from the beginning because we know we must play better than the Stirling game but hopefully we can get off to a good start.

“The Albion match was a very scrappy one and a typical derby match to be honest. It was very windy and heavy rain so the ball was just skidding about everywhere, so from that point of view it was good just to grind out the 1-0 win especially when we weren’t at our best.

“For my goal, the ball has come off one of their players back towards their keeper and I have just read it and took it round the keeper to score. It was a brilliant feeling to score against Stirling Albion because I know what it means to the fans.” The Wasps hitman cannot wait for the next derby after a really competitive game this time around and he feels it makes for a cracking second match.

Spence added, “I think the rematch with Stirling Albion in the cup is something to look forward to. We now know what each other are about and hopefully next time we can play a bit better next time on route to another win.”
