Alloa new boy Liam Buchanan insists the best is yet to come from them this season despite slumping to an opening day defeat at the hands of Queen of the South last weekend.

The Wasps striker was encouraged by the manner of their attacking display in the loss and reckons the number of chances shows they can still have a good season.

The former Ayr United talisman now hopes he can help his new side turn chances into their first win when Raith Rovers hit town on Saturday. Buchanan told Advertiser Sport, “It was a very disappointing afternoon for us. We expected a very difficult game coming to Palmerston Park and that’s exactly the way it turned out.

“This game is gone now and so it is important we pick ourselves up and go again because there is nothing we can do about it now.

“We get back to work and prepare for Raith Rovers and another tough test for us. There will be no easy games in this league but we must have a belief in what we are doing here and we will continue to play the right way.

“We are creating the chances and so hopefully we can turn that into a win this week. We want to get off the mark as quickly as possible in terms of our first win and are hopeful we can get it against Raith. I think we can hold our heads high because we played well, especially in the first half, we created a lot of chances and on another day we would have scored a couple ourselves.” Buchanan was a constant threat to the Queen’s defence but admits their hosts’ second goal knocked the wind out of their sail a little but they never gave up on their belief that they could get something from the game.

He said, “In the first half, some of the chances we created were really good ones compared with their goals where we have gift wrapped both for them.

“It can be difficult to lift yourself when things go against you the way it did for us but we were hopeful if we could have stuck in with them for the second half and nicked a goal then it might have changed the game for us but it just wasn’t to be. We never gave up and that is a good sign going forward for us.” The powerful forward also revealed how he is loving life at Recreation Park and believes the Wasps can have a really good season.

Buchanan added, “I am enjoying my time at Alloa so far and I am enjoying working under the manager.

“The lads have all been great with me, it is a superb dressing room and hopefully we can have a successful season. It is a brilliant league to be involved in with some exciting games and hopefully we can give a good account of ourselves.”
