Barry Smith heaped praise on his flawless Alloa Athletic side after they romped to a convincing 3-0 win over Cowdenbeath at Central Park last weekend.

The blossoming partnership between Greig Spence and Liam Buchanan in attack for the Wasps is something that has pleased the manager most and he believes there is still more to come from the in-form duo.

The win helped secure the Wasps’ first points of the new SPFL Championship season and ensured that they climbed above Edinburgh giants Hibernian in the table before the two sides lock horns at Recreation Park on Saturday.

But the gaffer insists his men won’t be fazed and hopes they can keep up the momentum of back-to-back wins in the space of a week.

Smith told Advertiser Sport, “I am happy with the performance and the result. Cowdenbeath is not an easy place to come and win but everything about the game was positive for us.

“The work-rate of the players and some of the football we played was terrific which produced the three great goals we scored.

“It was a pleasing afternoon but now it’s about continuing all aspects of the victory, working hard – which the players always give me – and putting the chances away when they come along.

“We will now concentrate on our game on Tuesday night against Hamilton Accies in the League Cup, we don’t look to far ahead, we look forward to it and go in on the back of two victories which is good for the confidence of the lads. Greig Spence has been scoring the goals but Liam Buchanan has been working so hard creating the chances.

“I think three or four of Spence’s goals have been created by Liam, so I am delighted for him to get off the mark himself.

“It is still early days for them as a partnership but you cannot ask for more than the start they have had and hopefully they will get even better still as they get to know one and other more.

“Greig has taken his goals very well so far in the cups and it is now great to see him take that form into the league.” Smith was delighted with the manner of his team’s comprehensive victory and felt the team’s execution of their game plan was the key to their win.

He said, “We knew where we could hurt Cowdenbeath, and knew the way we were going to play against them and it worked perfectly for us.

“We were positive from the start and looked to take the game to Cowdenbeath. When you go ahead in this league, teams tend to open up a wee bit, that’s why the first goal is so crucial.

“We scored three goals and created more chances to score more but I’m not going to complain when we win by three clear goals at a place like Cowdenbeath. ” Meanwhile, Cowdenbeath boss Jimmy Nicholl admitted his side were simply second best.

The Blue Brazil boss added, “I’m disappointed with our performance. That’s twice we’ve conceded early in the second half this season. Fair play to Alloa though because they played some really nice stuff out there and really deserved the points and we can have no complaints.”
