The dust hadn’t even settled on the Wasps momentous victory over fallen Edinburgh giants Hibernian and Barry Smith was being linked with the vacant Ross County job but Mike Mulraney insists his manager is going nowhere.

The Alloa chairman has seen it all before with previous manager Paul Hartley who was linked with a host of clubs during his time at Recreation Park and he believes this speculation can only be taken as a testament to the job Smith is doing at the club.

Last weekend’s 2-1 win over Alan Stubbs’ side is the club’s first over the Easter Road men in 91 years and the chairman reckons it was a winning day for the whole town.

Mulraney told Advertiser sport, “It was a great day for the whole club and it was what being in the Championship is all about. The club had a great day, the fans had a great day and the whole town had a great day. The economy of the town had a great day also and the place was absolutely bouncing. I have been through this for a number of years now and it is always fantastic when our managers are linked with other jobs because it means he is doing a fantastic job. Barry Smith is Alloa’s manager and that is the end of it as far as I am concerned. It’s great news especially when it is a Scottish Premiership club linked because that is a compliment to the job he is doing here and how well the team are performing. Barry Smith is the Alloa manager but it is great for him to be linked with other clubs and I hope he is for the next couple of years. We have made headlines around the country with the win over Hibs but we believe and our squad believes that we can beat anybody in our league.” A packed Recreation Park boosted by over 1000 home fans had a big part to play in the win, according to the experienced local businessman and he hopes the club can do enough to earn another year of playing against the big boys next season to reward their loyal support.

He said, “The attendance was fantastic and it was great to see over a thousand Alloa fans inside the ground. Now it is our job to win the games that will keep us in this league to keep those fans coming back and have them get to see the big city clubs coming to Alloa. That is vital for our club. They can’t all go up this season and some of them have got to come down so if we can stay up, we will continue to play against the city clubs, which is where I think Alloa want to be.” The Wasps owner insists he wasn’t shocked by the victory and believes the club will probably have to do the same to Rangers and Hearts if they are to survive in the league for another season.

Mulraney added, “We are all in the same league for a reason. Obviously, it is the first time in over 90 years that we have beaten Hibs but that is what we have to do to stay in this league. It was an outstanding performance but no more than I know our team is capable of.”
