Captain Marvel Ben Gordon believes Alloa have every right to be gutted to only draw with Rangers after their 1-1 draw with the Glasgow giants last weekend.

The Wasps skipper was only five minutes away from leading his troops to yet another shock win over one of the SPFL Championship’s ‘big three’ before David Templeton’s late strike earned Ally McCoist’s men a share of the spoils but he believes his side can look back with pride at their performance, writes Graeme Lafferty.

Gordon told Advertiser sport, “I suppose when reflect on the fact that we are disappointed to have drawn with Rangers then that is a positive thing.

“I don’t think we gave them too many clear cut chances in the game before they scored and even then it was two blocks and a save before the ball drops for them to score so we have every right to feel aggrieved not to have won the game.

“I think we deserved the lead at that point and we grew in confidence as the game went on. If you had offered us the draw at the start of the day we would probably have taken it but I think it is credit to the boys that we are disappointed not to have beaten them.

“We are proud of our performance. We created chances, scored a good goal and we could have killed it in the second half with Simmy’s header or when Spence is through on goal so there are many positives for us. We passed the ball well in the first half and got our goal which was pleasing and I think that knocked them out of their stride a little.

“Spencey then has a great chance to kill the game and you would back him to score that nine times out of ten but that’s football.” Gordon was left battered and bruised after a busy afternoon up against the physical presence of Gers duo Kris Boyd and Jon Daly but was delighted that they were able to keep the prolific pair off the scoresheet.

The 25-year-old was delighted with his new central defensive partner who put in a solid debut effort in the match and he reckons the on-loan Dundee man can go from strength to strength now.

He said, “I was in the wars a little in the first half especially with a few knocks but you have to expect that in a game like this against the likes of Boyd and Daly.

“Rangers are a big side who are not afraid to put themselves about and they are well used to coming to difficult venues and scrapping for a victory. They really cranked the pressure up on us late on but I thought we stood up to it really well. It was great to see Kyle Benedictus getting his debut and I thought he did well.

“He hasn’t played in a while so he will only get better from having the game time and hopefully we can form a decent partnership. For him to come into a game like this one, with crowd behind him, I thought he coped with the occasion really well.” The former Dumbarton defender has now challenged his side to produce the same level of performance from the Rangers match into this weekend’s clash with his old side at the Bet Butler Stadium.

Gordon added, “The main thing we have to take from the game is to now look to bring this level of performance to every game starting with Dumbarton on Saturday.

“If we can do that then I think we have shown that there is nothing to fear in this league.

“We have played both Rangers and Hibs now and we are still unbeaten but it is these games against the likes of Dumbarton that are going to be vital for us if we are going to stay up.

“We can only take great confidence from the Rangers result and use that momentum against Dumbarton so that’s what we will look to do.”
