Alloa Athletic star Daryll Meggatt has warned they must not dwell on their 3-2 defeat to Cowdenbeath that saw them perilously close to the foot of the SPFL Championship table.

The steady defender made his return from a foot injury that has kept him out of action for the past four weeks, and he admits it has been tough to sit and watch his side slump to four straight defeats in his absence.

The former Queen’s Park trainee provided a cameo role last Saturday as part of the cavalry charge towards the Blue Brazil’s goal in the closing stages.

The Wasps came up short in their efforts to rescue something from the game, but he sees no need for them to panic yet because of the talent they have at the club to turn things around.

Meggatt told Advertiser sport, “It is a difficult one for us to take because it puts us joint bottom of the league, but there is no point in dwelling on it because there is still a long way to go.

“We are still level with Livingston and only a point off Cowdenbeath so we can still easily turn things around with the squad we have here but it is how we react. It has been tough to miss out recently with the injury but I am back now, the foot has completely healed and hopefully I get the chance to force my way back in.

“To be fair to the boys, they have done up until this performance and so it has been hard for me to get back in, but we will have to just wait and see what next week brings.

“I got fifteen minutes at the end and I felt I did well, but it wasn’t just me at that stage.

“I think everyone realised the situation we were in, if we didn’t get a point then we were bottom, but it shouldn’t take for us to go 3-1 down for us to start playing.

“I am confident, however, that we can quickly dust ourselves down and get back up the table.” Meggatt admits the whole squad are shocked to be where they are in the table given some of their heroics against ‘the big three’ so far this year, but he feels it is the games against the teams around them that have cost them the most.

He said, “It is almost strange to think that we are bottom given some of the performances we have put in this season, but we must learn to put in those types of performances against Livingston, Dumbarton and Cowdenbeath, not just the Hibs, Hearts and Rangers games.

“It is the defeats to the teams around us that have hurt the most.” The 24-year-old, who celebrated his birthday on Monday, sees their impending run of away games as a blessing in disguise, after some rotten luck in their last few home games, and hopes they can take all three points from a tough test against Raith Rovers this weekend.

Meggatt added, “It is probably better for us to be off on the road now for a couple of games because it seems to suit our play. It will be a difficult game at Raith but we simply need to go there and pick up three points no matter what.

“The home game had nothing in it so we know we are more than capable of beating them.”
