Alloa goal hero Liam Buchanan admits they let themselves down with their performance in the 1-1 draw against Ayr United in the third round of the Scottish Cup last weekend.

The former Partick Thistle striker notched his sixth goal of the season with a strike that earned his side a replay, but he believes the Wasps never reached anything like their top form in the match.

The 29-year-old reckons they can be thankful to have a second chance to progress and he is still confident they can take advantage of that opportunity in front of their own fans.

Buchanan told Advertiser sport: “The gaffer is bitterly disappointed with us because he knows we can do a lot better and we let ourselves in the game. Ayr looked hungrier than us and that shouldn’t really happen, but credit to them because I thought they played well.

“The replay isn’t going to be easy because they have shown they are more than capable of competing with us so we will have to play a lot better and take our chances when they come along.

“It will be a totally different game at our park and we have to look to use the home advantage.

“The positives are that we are still in the cup and we now get another chance to progress in front of our own fans. I don’t think we played anywhere near our best so we will have to improve if we want to win.” Buchanan was delighted to extend his current goalscoring hot streak to four goals in his last five games, but admits he would trade his goals in for a win.

The in-form hitman says the players are all aware of their current winless run, but is certain one win is all they need to get right back on track.

He said: “Every game is a tough one for us at the minute and Livingston will be no different, but we remain positive. “I am delighted to get another goal, but obviously disappointed that we are not through yet. I am up there as a striker scoring goals and I am happy when I do that, but I would much prefer for it to be when we are winning games. We know what we have to do.” Buchanan has played alongside Ayr boss Mark Roberts twice in his career, but admits he enjoyed scoring against his old mate.

He added: “I have played with Marko at Partick Thistle and obviously I worked under him at Ayr as well so we are good friends, but it is nice to come back and score against a club he is managing!”
