Wasps skipper Ben Gordon says they must buck up their ideas against the sides around them if they want to thrive in the SPFL Championship this season.

The captain’s warning comes after Alloa slumped to a disappointing 3-2 loss to Falkirk in the local derby at the Indodrill Stadium last weekend and he reckons they simply gave themselves too much to do in the closing stages.

The former Dumbarton defender reckons all three goals conceded were avoidable and they must eradicate their silly errors quickly as Hibernian head to Clackmannanshire this weekend for their Scottish Cup Fourth Round clash.

Gordon told Advertiser sport: “I think in the end we just gave ourselves too much to do. We overplayed a bit at the start and gave them the early chance with the free kick.

“We then got ourselves back into the match before conceding a goal on the counter attack and we must do better to defend those sorts of breaks.

“The third goal is also a pretty poor one to concede, and many teams would have just thrown in the towel at that point and maybe conceded more, but we rallied, got our goal and only some decent defending from Falkirk has denied us a point in the end.

“The errors is something we have to cut out and quickly because a team like Hibs will punish us worse than Falkirk did for any slips. The spirit will always be there because that is the type of team we are, but we have to play better and execute our game plans a bit better against certain teams.

“Those are the games we all want to play in, but we must start getting points from the games like the Falkirk.

“We have been having some good performances against the bigger sides and then have let ourselves down against the teams in and around us in the league and we need to cut that out. It is not a good reflection on us if we can’t do that so it is something we will look to rectify.” Gordon believes the men in Black and Gold should still be full of confidence heading into the cup clash having been on a good run recently as well as already boasting a win over the Easter Road men this season.

He said: “It is a shame to end the five game unbeaten run in this manner, but if we needed a game to bounce back in then Hibs at home in the Scottish Cup is certainly it.

“We will always be confident going into games like this one, but we know Hibs will also be confident of coming here to get a result as well.

“We will take the confidence from beating them here earlier in the season and use it as extra motivation so we are confident going into the game.” Alloa have a bit of an injury crisis ahead of Hibs’ visit on Saturday and the commanding defender admits their task will be made even tougher should they be down to the bare bones come matchday.

Gordon added: “The injuries are a concern for us. We do have boys who can slot in and do a job for us, but with the size of squad it is far from ideal going into a massive game like this one.”
