GAFFER Barry Smith has spoken of his frustration after failing to land four top targets during his search to enhance his Alloa Athletic squad in the January transfer window thus far.

The Wasps boss is desperate to add fresh faces at the Indodrill Stadium to boost their bid for SPFL Championship survival this season, but as yet he has found the market to be a difficult one to operate in, especially for a part-time club.

Smith told Advertiser sport: “We have made good offers to four players so far this window, but they have all opted to go full-time. That is the difficulties facing us at this stage as a part-time club. We want to add the right player and that is always tough in January because the type of player we would like are the ones that clubs do not want to lose from their squad. It is very difficult to compete for the same players with the full time clubs in our league, but that is just the reality of our situation.” Smith says he will continue to cast his eye far and wide for the right target, but has urged the supporters patience.

He added: “I know the fans will be excited by the prospect of new arrivals - we have been unsuccessful so far, but it is certainly not through a lack of trying – January is never easy because every club is in the same boat. I don't see a point in just bringing players in for the sake of it, they have to be able to make a real contribution and enhance the quality we have here.”
