Alloa ace Daryll Meggatt says they are only looking up the way in the SPFL Championship after a hard-fought point in the 0-0 draw with Raith Rovers last weekend.

The former Queen’s Park trainee made his 100th appearance for the Wasps in Saturday’s stalemate, while he is delighted with the landmark, but admits their failure to secure all three points put a dampener on his day.

Bottom club Livingston turned up the heat on the Clackmannanshire outfit as they romped past Dumbarton with stunning 5-1 win, but the 23-year-old defender says they are only focused on catching the sides above them in the table.

Meggatt told Advertiser sport: “The Livingston result doesn’t change anything for us because we are not looking back the way. We are focused on catching Cowdenbeath, we are only a point behind now, so we just take one game at a time and try to get as many points on the board as possible.

“There is no one here worrying yet, we have Livingston on Tuesday night and obviously that is a massive one for us to win and keep them down the bottom.

“I am delighted to have played my 100th game for the club and I have had some great times here at Alloa. I thought I might have had a goal at one point, but it flashes just wide.

“It’s just a shame I couldn’t have marked it with a win, but a point is better than nothing and we will now just have to crack on against Hearts and see what we can get.” Meggatt doesn’t believe the spirit or belief is lacking in the Wasps dressing room despite the recent run, but he instead reckons they are guilty of over-playing at times.

Barry Smith’s men now host league leaders Hearts and the popular defender hopes they can once again rise to the big occasion.

He said: “I don’t think there is a lack of confidence in the team, things are just not falling for us in the final third. We are maybe guilty of an extra touch or pass at times and maybe we need to start shooting more. Hopefully, if we can do that then it won’t be long before we start finding the back of the net again.

“The Hearts game is now the focus for us first and its a massive game and it being live on the TV adds to the occasion as well. They have lost to Falkirk last weekend so hopefully that has dented their confidence.

“At the same time though, we know it will be tough because they are top of the league for a reason. We have put in our best displays of the season against the bigger teams so hopefully we can defy the odds once again this weekend.” The talented full back has been the subject of speculation this week linking him with a summer move to either Aberdeen and Dundee, but the man himself insists his only focus is keeping Alloa in the SPFL Championship.

Meggatt added “Of course it is very flattering to be linked with SPFL Premiership clubs and a move back to full time football, but I am only concentrating on Alloa Athletic at the moment and helping them climb out of the relegation zone.”
