Alloa manager Barry Smith says he is thrilled with his two new additions as he prepares his squad to face league leaders Heart of Midlothian live on BBC Alba on Saturday night.

The captures of Isaac Layne from Southend United and Calaum Jahraldo-Martin from Hull City have turned heads in Scottish football this week, but the Wasps boss says he is not finished there and hopes for more additions before the transfer window slams shut on Monday night.

Smith told Advertiser sport: “We are delighted with Calaum coming in because he plays for Hull City so he adds a real level of quality and a different dimension to our attack. He is a winger who is quick, direct and sharp so I hopefully he will be a big success for us. We’re thrilled to have made these additions, but I am hopeful still of adding one or two more and now it is just a case of getting those done by Monday and the deadline. Obviously, a signing like this one raises the profile of the club and that can only be a good thing for us moving forward. Isaac has come in from down south as well so I would imagine they will help each other to settle in but then we have a brilliant group of boys here who will make them feel very welcome. The new players have been brought in to add competition for places and that coupled with playing Hearts has definitely raised the tempo in training this week.” Alloa will have a virtually full squad for this weekend’s crucial clash with only longer-term absentees Iain Flannigan and Adam Asghar missing out, and the gaffer says both new boys will be in the squad.

Hearts arrive in Clackmannanshire following their first league defeat of the season last weekend to Falkirk and Barry Smith reckons his men will have to be ready for the backlash.

He added: “Both Calaum and Isaac will go straight into the squad for Saturday. It is great for the club to be involved in a game like this one live on TV, but we have to focus on the football and the job at hand which is to beat Hearts. To do that we must make sure we are difficult to break down and then take our opportunities when they come along. It took a deflected free kick for them to beat us the last time around at Alloa, so we know if we are at a very best then it will be very difficult for Hearts. They lost for the first time this season last week, so they will obviously be determined to avoid losing two weeks on the trot, but it is up to us to contend with that.”
