Alloa skipper Ben Gordon says it will be one of the proudest moments of his career to lead his side out against Livingston in the final of the Petrofac Cup on Sunday.

The big defender believes the 2-2 draw between the sides last weekend is an indication of how tight the McDiarmid Park showpiece will be, but insists the Wasps give their all to bring the trophy back to Clackmannanshire.

Gordon told Advertiser sport: “I think the final will be another tight clash, we know that going in, but we will prepare for it as best we can and I am confident if we can play to our best then we have a great chance.

“It is a one off game so we need to make sure we give everything and leave it all out on the pitch on Sunday. The boys are all looking forward to it now and it will be a great occasion to play in this type of game live on TV. It will be a moment of immense pride for me leading the boys out in a final.

“I never dreamed this would be possible at the start of the season, but we have earned our spot when you look at our run to the final so we can’t wait for the final now.” Gordon was quick to warn his teammates that they must quickly eradicate the mistakes that have plagued their league campaign in recent weeks if they are to lift the Silverware on Sunday.

He said: “Anything can happen in a cup final so we have to be alert, work hard to cut out the mistakes and then see where that takes us. We weren’t at our best in the 2-2 draw and obviously to lead twice and get pegged back was disappointing, but we will move on now and look forward to the final.

“Usually the first goal is so important in the SPFL Championship and I think that’s what makes it so hard to take when we concede to scrappy goals. We cannot expect to lift a trophy if we gift teams goals so we know we must be at our very best to come out on top.” The former Dumbarton player reckons that cup success could also provide them with the catalyst they need to haul themselves away from the relegation zone at the foot of the SPFL Championship.

Gordon added: “In terms of the league, we must put that to the back of our minds for a week and focus on the final. We still have our destiny in our own hands, but I definitely think a win would be a big boost to everyone heading into the league run-in.”
