GOAL hero Daryll Meggatt admits his final appearance for Alloa was the stuff of dreams after he notched the tie-clinching winner in the 3-0 playoff final win over Forfar Athletic last weekend.

The Wasps defender put in a man-of-the-match display in his final outing for the Wee County side before he departs for Dundee in the summer, and he reckons his last ditch tackle early in the second half was every bit as crucial as his goal.

The former Queen’s Park trainee says he can now leave with his head held high after securing the club’s SPFL Championship status and he is backing the current squad to do even better next term.

Meggatt told Advertiser sport: “It was obviously a great afternoon for me especially with the way it ended with scoring the winner, but I would never want to take anything away from the rest of the boys because every one of them are heroes.

“It is always sad to leave, but I have some great memories here. I am looking forward to my next challenge at Dundee now and to testing myself at that next level. Tackles like that one are just as important as goals for me because a Forfar goal at that point changes everything, but it was good to get the goal as well and leave on such a euphoric high.

“That was pretty much the storybook ending and one you always dream about, but the most important thing for me is I leave with Alloa safe in the Championship.

“The boys have a standard to uphold now for next year, in what will be another tough league again, but I know they will compete without a problem next year.” Meggatt enjoyed three successful seasons at the Indodrill Stadium and he believes it is the strong bond within the dressing room and their ‘never say die’ attitude that led to their stunning comeback.

He said: “I have been here for three years now and it has been virtually the same boys throughout, I have made some lasting friendships and what we have achieved together has been amazing. This team is never beaten and that is the way we have always been as a group and going into this game was no different. We let ourselves down a little at Forfar, but never at any point did we think it was gone.

“The first goal was crucial, but the belief and desire was always there. I just think the goal puts the doubts into their heads at the interval.” The 23-year-old is now eager to reunite with former Wasps boss Paul Hartley at Den’s Park next season as he looks to continue to progess in his career.

Meggatt added: “Dundee now brings me a new challenge and I look forward to working under Paul again. I get on really well with him and you saw from what he achieved here and with the job he is doing at Dundee that he is a top gaffer.”
