Alloa Athletic boss Danny Lennon revealed he expects his players to bounce straight back from Saturday’s League Cup defeat at Berwick Rangers.

The Wasps face Queen of the South in their Championship opener on Saturday and Lennon hopes his players can learn from the shock loss at Shielfield Park.

Lennon told Advertiser Sport: “I certainly learned one or two things about our character against Berwick, and we are now looking for a big reaction this week. What we have to make sure of is that we use the experience of that second half.

“Although we are obviously very disappointed, I am pleased with certain aspects of the first half in terms of going 2-0 up and creating good chances.

“Pre-season and the start of the season has been a gradual build-up. We were asked a few more questions and I think that will be the case again this week.

“We will certainly come into a few situations where we are tested by a quality Queen of the South side. They play with a high energy so we must learn how to handle that better.” Lennon could not hide his disappointment at his side’s failure to hold onto their half time lead, but praised their opponents’ second half performance.

The former St Mirren boss said: “It’s very disappointing having gone in 2-0 up. I thought we played a lot of good stuff in the first half. I knew Berwick would come out and get in our faces and you’ve got to give them credit for the way they came out during the second half.

“They caused us problems and didn’t give us any time to play. We tried a system that we felt could cause problems, and that worked well for us in the first half. It didn’t work quite so well in the second half and for that I have to give a lot of credit to Berwick.” Lennon hinted after the match that there would be new faces arriving at the Indodrill Stadium before the close of the transfer window.

He said: “I’m still looking to add to the squad. There are one or two things in the pipeline just now so we will see where that progresses this week.” Meanwhile Berwick Rangers manager Colin Cameron hailed their 3-2 comeback win as the best of his career.

He added: “I reminded the players that they were playing against a side who have been in the Championship for three years. I felt when we pulled a goal back that we could go on and take something from the game.

“Then when we got the third goal I thought we could even have gone on and added to the scoreline. It’s the biggest turnaround I’ve experienced as a manager.”
