Alloa debutant Mikk Reintam admits he is honoured to have the chance to become the club’s first full international to play for them in 120 years since Jock Hepburn back in 1895.

The Estonian international, who has 11 caps for his country, was ultimately left disappointed as his Wasps introduction ended in a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Berwick Rangers as they crashed out of the League Cup, but he was at a loss to explain their second half collapse.

The big defender was thrilled to finally complete his move from Czech Republic side MFK Frydek-Mistek last Thursday after negotiating weeks of red tape which almost scuppered the move and he cannot wait to his bit for the team.

Reintam told Advertiser sport: “It is a great feeling to finally complete my move to Alloa and I am so happy to be here.

“There was a few problems with the paperwork back in the Czech Republic, but I am just relieved that it is finally done so I can now focus on my football.

“I only found out about the record I have broken once I had signed and it is certainly an honour for me even if it does add some pressure. The Berwick game wasn’t the best debut for me, but there were a few positives we can take.

“In the first half, we played well and maybe should have put the game to bed, but they seemed to be hungrier in the second half for whatever reason and it is hard to say what went wrong.

“The movement was not there for us after the interval and in the end we lost the game.

“It is always difficult when you lose a two goal lead to lift the tempo again because all the momentum was with them, but we must move on quickly and look to bounce back now.

“The Berwick game was my first real taste of the football here so I know now the standard I must achieve and I am determined to do my best for the team.” Reintam, who has played against the likes of Robin Van Persie and Edinson Cavani during recent internationals for his native Estonia, admits he cannot wait to test himself against the best strikers in the SPFL Championship this season.

He said: “We won’t let the Berwick defeat affect our preparations now for the league opener, but instead we will just work hard and focus on Queen of the South now.

“We had a really positive pre-season so I am really positive about the season ahead and I think we will do well. There are many good gave to look forward to in the coming season, but I feel that we have a lot of talented players at the club who can cope with those games and prove what we can do.

“I believe we have the quality to fight against and upset some of the bigger teams. I hope to perform well and prove myself at this level against some top strikers, but the main thing is that we play well as a team and are able to achieve our goals.” The 25-year-old caught the eye of Danny Lennon during his extended trial with the club over the summer and says his new gaffer was a huge factor in his decision to sign up.

Reintam added: “I have been really impressed by the manager since the very first day that I came on trial at the club.

“I like the way he gets his points across to the players and the type of football he is trying to get us to play.”
