Delighted Glasgow Rangers manager Mark Warburton heaped praise on his side for their performance in their crushing 5-1 victory over Alloa last weekend.

The Light Blues were in a ruthless mood as they all but ended the match as a contest within the first half and the new boss reckons their frantic start was the key to ending their Alloa jinx.

Warburton said: “I was delighted with the approach, the commitment to the game from the first whistle and I thought we showed our intent and desire right from the start. From the start we were creating chances against a tough opponent on a difficult surface so I was really pleased with the high quality performance.

“The quality was great and we did miss a few chances, we hit the bar and post a couple of times in the first half but we were creating chances and we were positive. All over the park and even with all of the subs we showed we had a terrific desire and work rate.” The Ibrox side are now heavy favourites for the SPFL Championship title after an eye-catching 100% start to the new season, and Warburton reckon that is down to their renewed attitude and belief as they refused to let Alloa back into the match in the second half despite leading 4-1 for long spells of the match.

The Englishman also reserved special praise for Wasps star Michael Chopra after his special strike early in the first half.

He said: “It was a great finish by Chopra, he is a quality player and he showed that with a magnificent finish. You can see his experience coming through from playing down south and Alloa should be delighted to have him. You can’t switch off even at 4-1 up, you give them nothing and the nature of football is that you’re never good enough.

“We came out after half-time and it was 0-0 in our mind-set and we had to go for it and you saw us go for it, there were two or three offside goals, which were quite interesting, so we’ll look at that but we kept the performance up right until the final whistle.

“And again the backing from the fans was magnificent at a small venue and they came in their numbers so it was great to see the boys attacking one end and put the ball in the back of the net.” The post-match talking point was the outrageous skills of Tottenham loanee Nathan Oduwa and the former Brentford boss agreed with Alloa boss Danny Lennon’s thoughts that his talent should be nurtured.

Warburton added: “He’s a young guy who came on with a smile on his face, loads of talent, keen to impress and play well and he made a difference when he came on.

“He has got so much talent, there was no lack of respect. Just applaud him for it. I think Danny Lennon made some very sensible comments in that he has got talent and he is an entertainer and fans want to be entertained.”
