Alloa star Jason Marr says the more experienced members of the squad must step up to the plate to guide the young squad through their difficult start to the SPFL Championship campaign.

The Wasps slumped to their third straight defeat in the league this season with the 3-0 loss at Raith Rovers last weekend, but the fans’ favourite insists there is no time for them to feel sorry for themselves.

The Indodrill Stadium has become a fortress for the club in recent seasons with opponents citing complaints about the artificial surface as the reason and the central defender is aware that a strong home record would only enhance those doubts amongs visiting teams.

Marr told Advertiser sport: “The Raith defeat is a frustrating one for us because we matched them for long spells and it is a wonder goal that we can’t do anything about that has rattled us. We have let our heads go down and credit to Raith because they have seized on that to hammer home the advantage.

“It is up to us to fix that and react better in future, but I am sure we will. A lot of people complain about playing at Alloa so it is important to take advantage of that and get a few home wins under our belt to make the Indodrill a fortress again. The Morton game is a good chance to get back to winning ways.

“It has not been the best of starts for us, but then it has also been three very difficult games we have had. Stark’s Park is always a difficult place to come and win. It is very early days for us to be panicing or for people to consign us to a relegation battle because we are still very confident of getting results in this division.

“It is always tough when you are on a run like we are. When you play well in a game then concede a goal it is very difficult to not let the heads go down especially when we have such a young side, but it is up to us to react in the right manner.

“There is a lot of new faces at the club this term, but there is also a lot of boys who have been over the course many times in this league so it is up to us to guide the younger boys through it, but there is a long way to go still.” Marr and the rest of the Alloa squad are preparing for an early season showdown with fellow relegation favourites Greenock Morton this weekend as Jim Duffy’s men make the trip to Clackmannanshire.

And the 26-year-old knows there is no time like the present to turn around their early season form.

He said: “Every game is a massive one for us this season and this one is certainly no different, but it is a big opportunity for us to get up and running with a win to bounce back. We are still confident in our ability that we can go and hurt teams and hopefully that will begin at home to Morton on Saturday. We showed in the first half of the Raith game that we can pass teams off the park when we get into full flow so we will go into the game looking to build on that.” The former Celtic trainee hopes the Wasps faithful can stick behind them as they look to battle against the odds once again this season in SPFL Championship, but he knows it is time for the players to get stuck in to turn things around.

Marr added: “I understand the fans’ frustrations, but it was always going to be a tough season for us being a part-time team in this league.

“We are still confident enough that we have a good depth to our squad and we just have to get the sleeves rolled up, dig in and fight for every point. We know how quickly things can change in football and one result can be a catalyst for us so hopefully we can get it against Morton.”
