MEMBERS of the Tullibody-based Scottish Martial Arts Centre had a successful weekend recently as they brought home a number of medals from a tough competition in Glasgow.
Both adults and the younger competitors were fighting for the top spots on different sides of Glasgow but both proved as competitive as one another.
Youngster Ryan Tough (13) added to his collection of awards at the GTUK Championship, now having one gold, two silvers and five bronze medals to show off.
This year he has made the podium at the WKA Scottish Kickboxing Championships in Motherwell, West Lothian Taekwon-do Championships in Livingston and Elite Scottish Taekwon-Do Championship in Dalkeith.
Ryans' teenage teammates -Andrew Ballentyne (16) and Sean McGill (14) - also brought home silver wear for the centre recently, adding to their successful year.
Their coach, Gary McGuire, told the Advertiser, "We are very proud of all the kids that represent the centre, but these lads have shown real determination by attending as many competitions as possible".
The centre runs popular teenage classes where members can train in classes with students of similar age.
Instructor Adam Paterson explained the benefits this has for this age group, saying: "Our teenager classes have been very popular and actually help keep our kids interested in martial arts when they get to this age range.
"Before the classes were launched, teenagers had to train with the younger children. This probably isn't the best environment for the teens to further develop their skills, but now we have a really engaging class that seems to be offering kids of that age a real alternative to hanging about the streets."
The centre now offers teenage Taekwon-Do, kickboxing and MMA and offers free trials for new students.
The adult members also showed they were just as competitive as the youngsters with seven jujitsu practitioners competing at the Scottish Open at the Kelvin Hall in Glasgow.
With an impressive three golds, one silvers and three bonzes, the centre would like to congratulate Gary Chalmers, Gary McGuire, Jeremy Haslam, Calum Murrie, Kyle McGuinness, Harry Connal Jr and Craig Hamilton on great performances.
The Scottish Martial Arts Centre has been running grappling and jujitsu classes since it opened in September last year and now has busy classes three times a week.
