Clackmannan County It was an intense week of golf for Dollar's Scott Borrowman in the European Team Championship. Each of 16 European countries was represented by six players, and the first two days of competition comprised 36 holes of stroke play to split the field into two flights of 8 teams who then went on to matches. In the stroke play, Scotland qualified comfortably in 5th place--- France led the qualifiers. The draw gave Scotland their first match against Germany, and thanks to a fine comeback from Scott when he won on the last green, Scotland went through to meet the leading qualifier France in the semi-finals. A win put Scotland into the final against England, but they lost narrowly---- unfortunately Scott lost his match at the 19th hole.

Scott will have a break before an intense three weeks of golf---- the Scottish Amateur, the European Individual in Spain, and almost certainly he will be in the still-to-be-announced Scottish team for the Home Internationals at Ganton.

Two Clackmannanshire players are still in the World Amateur rankings--- Scott Borrowman at 279 and Alva's Lawrence Allan at 1026. While some might not be impressed by these figures, it must be remembered that the rankings are world wide and go up to around 6000; Scotland has 1 player in the top 100, 5 in the top 200 and 13 in the top 500.

It's a slightly quieter time this week with the Open Championship at Muirfield---there is a Senior Open at Braehead, and entries for the 36 hole Clackmannan County Championship at Alloa will be closing. The Scottish Boys Stroke Play Championship will be held next week but again there are no local entries.

Athletics Scottish combined events championships Grangemouth, 13/14 July 2013 Central AC athletes rewrote the Scottish and club record books at the national combined events championships at Grangemouth at the weekend with 4 new Scottish all time best performances including a Scottish record, championship best and numerous club records as Central athletes won two golds and two bronze medals.

Highlight of the weekend came in the under 16 girls pentathlon event where Caitlin Edgar stunned the crowd in the opening long jump event soaring to a superb new Scottish under 15 record of 5.67m.Unfortunately due to a wind gauge malfunction the record is unlikely to be ratified however with the UK championships and other events still to come she has plenty of opportunities to get an official record breaking mark before the end of the season. Caitlin continued her form with another huge personal best in the 80m hurdles and another win in the shot and high jump. Caitlin went into the final 800m event with a 300 point lead that meant the opposition were out of sight so could focus on breaking the championship record set by former world youth high jump champion Aileen Wilson in 1998. Caitlin did this, breaking the record by three points. This score places her 2nd on the Scottish all time list and 14th on the UK all time list for the pentathlon event placing her ahead of Olympic champions Jessica Ennis and Sally Gunnell at the same age which suggests Caitlin has a bright future ahead of her.

Also on record form was Georgia Smith in the under 14 girls pentathlon. She opened with an excellent high jump and a strong 75m hurdles. She then won the long jump and shot with personal bests before a tight finish in the 800m saw her win gold in an excellent score of 2471 points which not only smashes the club under 13 record but places Georgia 5th on the Scottish all time list for the event.

Competing alongside Georgia was training partner Lucy Davison who set excellent personal bests in the 75m hurdles to win her heat and at 800m to finish 6th. This was an excellent result as the youngest athlete in the field and Lucy will look to return and follow in Georgia's footsteps next year.

Calum Brown was also on excellent form in the senior mens decathlon, competing against a high class field and setting a number of personal bests and season bests on his way to finishing third.

Central's medal tally was completed by Charlie Dineen in the under 16 boys pentathlon with a bronze.

Cricket Clackmannan County took on Fauldhouse in glorious sunshine as the home side looked to pick up a win to avoid a relegation battle.

Fauldhouse chose to field and Graham Oliver was dismissed on the second ball of the game.

Skipper Noor Jhangir was then caught in the sixth over for seven runs.

Ash Rasul and Graeme Anderson were then able to built a partnership of 60 before Ash was out for 19, leaving Clackmannan on 67-3 in the 16th.

Tipu Sultan came in to bat before Anderson was out for 45.

Tariq Mehboob was able to assist Tipu in getting the score to 114 before Tariq was run out.

Chris Priddle and Tipu were able to survive a change of bowlers but they were both out, along with Blair Campbell, by the time the score reached 139.

Fauldhouse looked to have made the right call in choosing to field first but Greig Taylor and Rizwan Ashraf posted a great 95 run partnership to change the complexion of the game completely.

Greig went on to make 60 not out and record his first ever half century for the first team while Rizwan made a solid 27 before being caught which brought Kash Ali in to bat with Greig at the end of the innings and finishing on 1 not out.

Clackmannan had finished on 244 for 9 from their 50 overs and the spectators had been thoroughly entertained by the 8th wicket stand.

It was a rampaging Clackmannan that took to the field after tea as Fauldhouse required five runs an over to record the win.

However excellent aggressive bowling from Campbell and Ashraf had reduced Fauldhouse to just 15-2 after 10 overs.

It was 22-4 in the 16th over before a strong stand at the next wicket had Fauldhouse push to 109-5.

Ultimately Clackmannan's total was never under real threat and their opponents finished with 196 from 50 overs.

Parkside Driving School man of the match is Rizwan Ashraf for a valuable 27 with Greig Taylor and bowling figures of 10 overs, 2 maidens, 2 wickets for just 24 runs, taking the game away from the opposition with both bat and ball.
