FISHING Another busy week at Wellsfield Fishery.

Over 400 trout were caught this week, including Rainbows, Blues and Browns using both fly fishing and bait fishing methods.

The average weight was 3lb per trout, and the average catch was 3 fish per angler.

Water temperatures are cooling well due to the colder evenings and cold breezes at night over Wellsfield Farm. Our spring fed lochans are also benefiting from the colder spring water, meaning trout fishing has come on earlier after the warm summer.

The fishery is open for evening sessions 8am - 9pm 7 days. Fly life is prolific at the moment.

Most fly fishers caught fish using floating lines and a sink tip just a few feet under the surface.

The slight breezes have made for excellent buzzer fishing and top of the water sport using snatchers and hoppers. Best flies this week: Hoppers, Daddy Long Legs, HH Damsel, Yellow Dancer, Diawl Bachs, PTN, Montanas, Buzzers, fished with a floating line and long leader.

One 50 Red Tagged Trout was caught by lucky angler B Morrison (Clydebank) in his bag of 4 fish for 15lb from the top fly fishing pond.

Fish of the week was a 12lb Rainbow Trout caught by A Galloway (Fife) using mini dancers.

Bait anglers best methods were baits fished at mid depth worked best. Best Baits: Wasp Grubs, Worms and Floated White Maggot.

Best Catches for this week: D Waters (Falkirk) 5 for 20lb, best 10lb Rainbow Trout, I Somerville (Stirling) 5 for 18lb 5oz, best 9lb 5oz Rainbow Trout, T Davis (Alloa) 5 for 16lb, best 4lb Blue Trout, P McMenemy (Bonnybridge) 5 for 15lb, I Thomson (Falkirk) 5 for 15lb, G Henderson (Mollinsburn) 5 for 15lb, S Shanks (Stirling) 5 for 15lb, A Cairns (Bishopbriggs) 4 for 24lb, best 12lb Rainbow Trout, B Morrison (Clydenbank) 4 for 15lb, inc. The under 18 athletes had to battle with a strong wind and a mixture of sunshine and rain which put paid to any hopes of personal bests for the track athletes.

Tom Chandler of Balfron was on form in the long jump taking gold in a close competition in which the lead changed several times. Tom went in front in round 2 with 6.20m only to lose it in round 3 to Glasgow athlete Joseph Amouzo who leapt to 6.22m. Tom then hit the board perfectly in round 5 to reach a new personal best 6.38m which proved to be enough to win.

Tom then attempted the 110m hurdles for the first time ever, and looked to be on course for a second medal until he clipped a hurdle and ended up just edged out into 4th place.

Mark Guthrie was also on form in a high class hammer contest opening strongly with a new club record 55.43m then improving to 55.91m then 56.26m to take silver only narrowly behind the winner. This was not just a club record but moves Mark to 8th place in the UK rankings.

Lydia Simpson of Braco showed a return to form as she claimed her first national medal for 2 years in the 100m. She ran strongly into the stiff breeze to take 2nd in 13.42s. She then almost added another medal in the 200m with 27.12s for 4th.

Dunblane's Emily Batchelor leapt to an excellent new personal best 5.47m for bronze in the long jump. The battle for the medals was tight as Emily's distance was tantalisingly 4cm short of the winning jump. Emma Boyle of Balfron was also on form with a personal best 4.98m for 6th. Emily then set another personal best 10.86m in the triple jump to take 5th place.

The proudest medal winner of the day was probably Sophie Parson's of Thornhill (pictured) who stepped onto a podium for the first time ever at a national championships after 4 years with the club. She took bronze in the 100m hurdles fighting all the way into the headwind for 15.91s to claim her first ever national medal.

The high jump saw Balfron brothers Ben & Lewis McGuire battling it out in difficult conditions with Ben taking bronze with 1.75m and Lewis 6th in 1.70m.

There were several other under 18s performing well. Cameron Wilson of Bannockburn just missed out on the medals with 4th in the triple jump with 12.37m. Steeplechase international Emily Greenan placed 7th in the flat 1500m in 5:08.26. Jonathan McGuire ran well in the 200m to reach the final placing 7th (24.64s) and Anna Thomson just missed out on qualifying for the 100m final as she was just edged into 3rd in her heat.

The club's under 16 athletes had much more benign conditions the following day with sunshine and only a light wind resulting in some excellent performances.

Amy Gullen of Muckhart was in superb form in the High Jump. The Celtic games champion was left jumping alone after she was the only athlete to clear 1.55m. She then increased her winning margin clearing 1.60m and 1.65m before attempting a new personal best height of 1.68m. She soared clear to take the gold medal in style then had a very good attempt at 1.71m which she just clipped off with her heel to indicate further improvement is possible. Amy's 1.68m jump was not only a new club under 17 record, it also broke the club senior women's record which had stood since 1982 and lifts Amy into the top 10 in the UK under 17 rankings.

Dunblane's Sarah Pearson was also on record form as she took gold in the 80m Hurdles. Sarah has missed much of the season through injury but showed she is back to her best as she won clearly in 11.88s improving the club record she set in winning the same title last year.

Bevhan Trevis of Clackmannan was Central's 3rd gold medallist of the day winning the discus with an excellent distance of 33.01m just short of her own club record set at the Celtic Games international earlier in the month.

Dunblane pair Jamie Paterson and Iain Davies were both on form adding to the medal tally. Iain fought a hard race in the 1500m as he joined a breakaway group of 3 that split from the rest of the field. When the pace quickened in the final lap Iain found himself in a close battle for 2nd. He sprinted all the way up the home straight but just lost out by 0.1s. However Iain had the consolation of a bronze medal in a time of 4:20.29. Jamie was proud to take his first ever national medal in the 400m with a well-judged race to take bronze with a time of 53.74s. Charlie Dineen was also on the podium in the 100m hurdles running 14.80s, also for bronze.

Madeleine Woods also made the trip to Aberdeen and was rewarded with a personal best 29.15s in the 200m and ran close to her lifetime best in the 800m with 2:34.47.

Our under 14s were well represented with Joe Driver just missing the medals with 4th in the 100m (13.18s). Rachel Martin also just missed out in the Shot throwing 8.69m for 4th. Matt Chandler ran well for 5th in the 80m hurdles (14.30s) as did Lucy Davison in the 75m Hurdles for 6th (13.61s). Jack Houghton had two 7th places in the shot (7.41m) and 200m (27.66m) and Sandy Holl ran well in the 800m with 2:39.3.

Muckhart GC Muckhart Golf Club's long standing reputation for developing junior golfers and giving them an excellent start in the game came to the fore again on Saturday, when ex Junior Member Michael Campbell returned from his current base in Gullane to win the club's Stewart Scratch Open, an amazing 32 years after he first took the title as a 17 year old in 1981!!

Even more amazing was the 2 handicapper's score of 1 under par 70 in monsoon like conditions which took the trophy by a staggering 8 shots from local member Andy Merrilees, with Colin Halcrow from Windyhill also on 78 and George Cruickshank from Aberdour on 79. The handicap prize was won by Peter Harding of Aberdour with a 73, pipping another returning member Scott Wallace of Balmore with a better inward half, and Brian Reid of Dunbar who shot net 74.

The club would like to thank all the players who turned out and played in easily the worst overhead conditions of the year, and are extremely grateful to sponsors Hillfoots Auto Centre and the band of course volunteers who worked so hard to keep the course playable throughout the day, as well as the Greenkeeping staff who prepared the course in such an excellent fashion prompting universal praise despite the weather.

County Golf news Dollar's Scott Borrowman had a very good Home International performance at Ganton lat week, winning all his foursomes with Grant Forrest and only losing one single. The best performance came in his first match against Wales where he was unbeaten--- in fact his win clinched the match for Scotland----one up with a few holes to play put him under a little pressure, but he came through strongly to win 2/1. In the second days play, he halved his singles, but the team lost to Ireland. It was all on the last match against England, and another foursomes win set him up for the singles, but he could not recover from going behind in the early stages of the match. The Scottish team lost again and finished in third place.

As mentioned earlier, Tillicoultry's John Gullen made a nostalgic trip to the Eden tournament and had some minor success---- he made the top 64 for the match play stages with scores of 80 over the Eden course and 74 over the more difficult New course at St Andrews. As the former 1981 Scottish Boys Stroke play Champion, he had a good win in round 1 by 3/1, but lost out at the 20th in round 2 against the Baberton Club Champion. John reckons he was the oldest competitor in the last 32 by (just) more than a year or two.

The 2013/2014 Midland Alliance season starts at Muckhart this week, and runs through till April 2014. It is very popular and has a good representation of Clackmannan golfers---- even the waiting list for membership has been closed.

The Walker Cup match between Great Britain and Ireland and the USA is the pinnacle of representation for any top Amateur golfer. Keen followers of Amateur golf will be very disappointed that there is no Scot in the side (or as a reserve) to play the 2013 match in America. It is probably only the second time in history this has happened since the match started in the early 1930's--- the last time was 1949 when the team of 8 contained 4 each from England and Ireland.
