Dollar GC Dollar’s winter long competition, the popular Polish Cup, got underway with the first round on Saturday 12th October on a fine, dry day despite a cold northerly wind. There was a good turn out of members and it was one of those days when it all came together for long handicapper Steven Parke who showed his true potential with a massive 48 Stableford points. With the course in excellent condition the prospects for golf at Dollar over the coming winter looks to be good particularly so with the summer greens in play throughout. With the membership subscription reduced by £100 for 2014 now is a good time to join, 14 months for the price of 12, and at only £10 to play the course as a visitor it is the place to be for your sport this winter.

AMATEUR FOOTBALL Cupar Hearts 0-1 Tillicoultry Tillicoultry pulled off a massive cup shock after knocking out Cupar Hearts in the 2nd round of the Scottish Cup on Saturday. The Hillfoots side knew they would be facing an uphill task when they travelled to the Kingdom Caledonian League Champions but a single goal by Robbie Burden was enough to put the away side into the 3rd round.

The game started at a frantic pace with Cassidy testing Bain in the Tilly goal after only two minutes. Five minutes later Cupar were unlucky when a deflected shot looped over the stranded Bain but the crossbar came to Tilly’s rescue. The away side began to settle into the game and McDermott and Martin tried their luck from range with both shots drifting just wide.

Tillicoultry’s next effort was to prove more rewarding, Baird whipped in a cross which was only half cleared to Burden, who showed good composure to loop the ball over O’Sullivan and into the empty net. This seemed to spur Cupar back into life and only last ditch blocks from Baird and Keye kept the lead intact.

Tilly brought on Wardlaw for Brennan at half time and he nearly had an instant impact after playing in Burden but O’Sullivan pulled off a fantastic save. Cupar really took control of the game as the half wore on and Bain tipped Ramsey’s fierce volley round the post. Cassidy was then put in behind the Tilly defence but Ryan Martin recovered brilliantly to clear the danger.

As the game moved in to the last ten minutes Cupar began to push more men forward but corner after corner was dealt with by the magnificent Tilly defence. In the last action of the game, Ramsey won a final corner for the home side. With all 22 players including the Cupar goalkeeper packed in the penalty area, the ball broke to Anderson who volleyed the ball to safety as the ref blew the full time whistle to secure a fantastic result for Tilly.

Tillicoultry manager John Burden was delighted with his side after the game.

He said, “The lads came up here knowing that they would need to put in a massive effort to have any chance of progressing, but all the boys were terrific and although Cupar certainly dominated for long spells I felt we were worthy winners. It now gives us another Scottish Cup tie to look forward to in a few weeks which is brilliant, but now we need to try and carry this performance over to our next league game.” FVWL Horseshoe 2-4 Kincardine Kincardine travelled to Clackmannan on Sunday for the first “Battle of the Bridges” of the season.

The visitors had won their last 3 matches in some style, so went into this encounter fancying their chances against one of the league’s top sides.

Horseshoe started the match brightly, with some direct play troubling the heart of the Kincardine defence, indeed they almost took the lead on 5 minutes when a ricochet broke to Chicarella who’s header crashed off the crossbar before Kernaghan scooped the ball to safety.

Gradually the Fifers got a foothold in the game and on the 20th minute deservedly opened the scoring.

Duncan Mcphater accepted a ball from his goalkeeper, then with a pin point pass picked out Gary Paterson, who in turn set Gary Pearce galloping down the right wing.

Pearce lifted his head and picked out Anderson on the edge of the area, who took one touch to set himself then another to send a deflected effort crashing past Craggs and into the top corner.

Chances were at a premium in the first half, with a stinging 25 yard pile driver from McPhater which the goalkeeper did well to parry, the only other notable opening of the first period.

Playing back up the famous slope in the second half, Kincardine set about their business in a really professional manner, and on the hour mark forced a corner on the right.

Aitken’s kick was only partially cleared and the impressive Gary Pearce was on hand to poke the ball home, sending the quite sizeable travelling support into ecstasy.

And before they had the chance to settle back into the game, Horseshoe were 3 down, good work by Kernaghan and Paterson sent Bryan Anderson through on goal, and the skipper didn’t disappoint, finishing with some aplomb to double his own tally on the day and give his side what was surely an unassailable advantage.

With 10 minutes remaining the hosts did get themselves back in the game, a 25 yard effort which left Hutchison with no chance, and breathed life back into a game which looked dead n buried.

The chances of a comeback were soon put to bed though as Jake Rodgers was sent crashing in the penalty area, allowing substitute Alan Stag the chance to get his name on the scoresheet, which he did cooly from 12 yards.

Horseshoe managed to finish the match with 10 after their right back was ordered off for a selection of fouls on Rodgers, but did grab a late consolation after a long ball caught the Kincardine rearguard sleeping and left the attacker the simple task of lobbing the on rushing Hutchsion to add some respectability to the shoreline.

It’s a bit early in the season to be making bold predictions but this result and the manner of the performance will give Kincardine immense confidence heading into the rest of the campaign.

Central Athletic Club once again dominated the opening fixture of the cross country season in winning both the Men and Women’s senior East District Relay titles at Deans Country Park, Livingston. There was further proof of strength in depth with the senior Men’s B team taking bronze medals and the Club’s juniors finishing fourth and sixth respectively in the Girls and Boys races.

First off were the Junior Girls races with a challenging three legs of 2500metres, Under 13 first leg runners Heather Scott (sixth in 10:40) and Skye Henderson (15th/11:15) had strong runs and passed on to Jenny Walls (fifth/10:17) and Elizabeth Thompson (13th/10.41) for the second Under 15 leg. Under 17, Kathryn Gillespie came home with 9min 5secs to record the fastest lap of the day, almost catching third placed Corstorphine AAC on the final run in but having to settle for fourth place for Central’s A Team. Another good run by Eilidh Russell (10.17) saw Central’s B Team finish tenth, a great effort with Elizabeth and Eilidh moving up age groups and Skye in her first year in this event.

The Young Male race was held over the same 2,500 metres loop as the Young Females. Under 13 Sandy Holl held his form well for Central’s ‘A’ team finishing in a highly competitive fifth place (9:36). Under 15 Conor Ryan continued the challenge with a sound effort of 9min 11secs as the team slipped to eigth and it was Under 17 Iain Davies who finished the Club’s effort with another strong run (8:36) to bring the ‘A’ team through for a highly creditable sixth overall. The Club’s ‘B’ team saw Under 13 Euan Smith (10.14/16th) and Under 15 David Nairn (10:40/26th) both running well and gaining useful experience in an incomplete team.

The Women’s race, over three legs of 4000 metres, saw Morag MacLarty building a big lead on the first leg with the fastest lap of the day (14:01). Jennifer Emsley (15:01) extended Central’s lead on the second leg and with Fiona Thompson (14.23) on the final leg it proved a significant win for Central’s Ladies by 1min 50secs. Central’s B Team of Isla Campbell (15:54/eigth), Under 20 Emily Greenan (16:12/sixth) and Jennifer Hutchison (15:45) brought the Team home in an excellent fifth place.

The Central’s Mens Teams have a history of winning this event going back seven years so once again there was pressure on the ‘A’ team to deliver. With four legs of 4,000 metres it was Sean Reilly who was given first leg responsibilities racing in only 14 seconds down on Irish Internationalist Dermot Cummins of Corstorphine AAC as Sean finished with 12min 34secs. Robert Russell gave an assured performance on the second leg to record the fastest lap of the day (11:59) and hand a 26 second lead to third leg runner Andrew Butchart.

Andrew extended the Club’s lead with an excellent 12:42 effort and it was left to Alastair Hay (12:10) with the second fastest time of the day to bring home the Gold medals. Meanwhile Central’s B team were making their own little bit of history, with Tom Watson showing speed and commitment to record 12:45 on the first leg with his team in third. Scott Green ran strongly with 13:37 as the team stayed in contention in fifth. Alex Hendry proved he was back to good form with a 12:30 leg to bring the team back to third and it was left to Conan McCaughey to finish of the effort with a fine 12:43 run and lift the Bronze medals.

Central’s ‘C’ team of Martyn Paterson (13:42/17th); Lewis Millar (13:46/11th); Phil Williams (14:33/12th) and Chris McHardy (14:58) to finish in a fine twelfth overall. Central’s top Masters Team of Robert Hutchison (15:00); Hugh Buchanan (15:59); Roger Greenaway (16:22) and David Eckersley (15:10) finished 29th overall and an improved fifth Masters Team.

Central’s D Team of David Lindsay (15:15); Colin Alexander (15:04); Stuart Watson (15:39) and Alan Gall (18:01) all ran well to finish 34th overall. Cameron Campbell (17:47) ran the first leg in an incomplete team in 51st place at the end of his effort.

Six of Central’s athletes had competed the previous day in the English National Six Stage Road Relays in Sutton Park, Birmingham. This is one of the most prestigious events in the Road Running Calendar and although Central AC have competed over the past few years there has been a feeling of never quite realising their potential.

Saturday proved somewhat different with Andrew Butchart tackling the first leg and coming round the 5,847metre loop in a fine 17min 25secs in sixth place. The experienced Robert Russell then set off to complete his stint in 17:27 to complete the stage in first place and start the English big guns reaching for their worry beads. Ross Houston, taking a day off from his marathon preparations, came round in 18.14 with the team still in close contention in fifth. Alastair Hay continued the challenge on the fourth leg pulling back one place as he finished in 17:49. John Newsom, another aiming for marathon glory in two weeks, came through strongly to pull the team into medal contention with 18:00. It was left to Steeplechaser Michael Wright to finish off Central’s effort but in spite of pulling out all the stops Michael had to give way to some top English runners as he brought the team home with 18:36 to finish in a highly respectable fifth place.
