Callum Macaulay took part in a 'beat the pro' competition to help raise funds for Dollar Golf Club.

VISITORS to Dollar will be able to pitch up at a new holiday flat just about to open in the village.

'The Glen' is the latest in a series of money making ideas by members of the local golf club who hope the venture will ensure the survival of the course.

Financial difficulties and a drop in membership have seen the club's financial reserve fall from £70,000 10 years ago to being almost wiped out until action was taken last year.

In an attempt to get things back on course the Drive to Survive campaign was launched. Included in the fundraising was a fun day that featured a beat the pro competition with the European Tour's Callum Macaulay and Scotland's top amateurs taking part in a birdie and eagle challenge.

Fundraising organiser David Borrowman told the Advertiser, "We were in trouble financially but through the Drive to Survive we have enough to keep us going until the end of 2011.

"We need to find an extra source of income though and we hope turning part of the clubhouse into a flat can do this."

When completed the apartment will be able to accommodate four to six people and offers a "view to die for" over Dollar Glen.

Those staying will take on the status of a temporary club member and be able to enjoy access to the club house and a discounted rate to play the course of £30 for the week.

The weekly cost of hire ranges from £450 in the low season to £795 in the week of the Open Championship at St Andrews.

"We hope folk will see Dollar as a decent holiday resort," said David. "It is a nice village and apart from Castle Campbell Hotel it is quite difficult to find somewhere to stay.

"We will email golf clubs across the UK and in the United States to let them know we are here.

"Parents of children at Dollar Academy struggle to get accommodation here and ex-pupils often want to stay so we hope there will be a market with them."

If work progresses as expected club officials hope the flat will be available to rent from Easter. If the venture proves a success a further two holiday flats could be integrated in to the second floor of the club house.

The club steward, who previously stayed in the clubhouse, has moved to other accommodation.

David said, "We had thought about selling off the clubhouse and building another one but we couldn't make the sums work, so we are keeping the club house."

See Dollar Golf Club's website for details on how to book the 'The Glen' Holiday Flat.
