A FORMER Dollar Academy pupil is hoping to raise enough money to allow her to compete as part of the Great Britain Under 19s Rifle Team in South Africa.

Rebecca Davis (18) has been chosen as part of the team of eight which will represent the nation in matches such as the RSA Junior International Match and the Junior International Protea Match - she is the only Scottish member and will also have the opportunity to shoot as an individual.

In order for the team to travel over to South Africa, from 14 March until 9 April, it needs to raise £2500 in funding and with the deadline looming at the end of February, Rebecca is keen to get as much financial support as possible.

Currently a student of Interior and Environmental Design at Dundee University, she has been busy selling raffle tickets on campus, baking cakes to sell and has even been sponsored to clean the student accommodation in a bid to raise the funds.

To get onto the team Rebecca was required to write an application before attending a selection week down at Bisley, The National Shooting Centre, where candidates had to show their talent for shooting and team work.

She explained the moment she received the good news, "I was on the train home from London all afternoon after the weekend was over, so I was anxiously awaiting the email telling me if I had made the team or not whilst on the longest train journey of my life.

"I had just arrived late in the evening at Edinburgh train station when I got the email on my phone finding out I had made the team. My mum stood anxiously waiting to pick me up and hear the news, I just ran up to her and gave her a massive hug telling her I had made the team. I was so happy that all I could do was jump up and down excitedly whilst people stared at me."

She added that she is proud to have the opportunity to represent Scotland and is looking forward to learning about a new culture.

"I love travelling and so am looking forward to the experience. What I'm really looking forward to is competing as a team in a brand new environment for all of us.

"It is always harder to play away from home so it will be a great challenge to work together to be as good as we can be. I hope to gain the skills to be the best team player that I can be whilst I am over in South Africa," she said.

Rebecca would welcome anyone who can offer a small donation, or who would simply like to help share her story. She can be contacted on rebeccadavis93@hotmail.co.uk
