Golf Alloa Golf Club Alloa Golf Club ladies held their Invitation Shotgun on one of the first dry Wednesdays of the season! The weather was kind and this was reflected in the low scores returned. Overall winners were Traceyanne Whitelaw and Lynne McBain and runners up were Hazel Hume and Heather Todd. The ladies enjoyed a lovely meal after the game in the clubhouse.

Both players had achieved some notable victories during the preliminary rounds and the match proved a keenly contested event with a high standard of golf on display. In the warm, dry conditions and with the course in good shape it was Maria who took an early lead being five up at one stage. Although Moragh reduced this to only two Maria’s game remained steady and, at dormie two, a half in fives at the seventeenth was enough for Maria to retain the title for the second year.

The final of the Bronze Division Championship (the Jean McLellan Quaich) was a very close match between Christine Hogg and Carol Caren and it went all the way and with Christine one up after seventeen she had to sink a tricky putt on the eighteenth to close out the match.

The players in both Divisions are to be congratulated on their high standard of golf and the good spirit in which the matches were played.

Clackmannan County LOCAL CLUBS MISS OUT IN ALEXANDER TROPHY.

In the Centenary Alexander Trophy (a team event for Golf Clubs in Clackmannanshire and Stirlingshire) played over the Falkirk Tryst Golf course last weekend, Alloa was the best of the local clubs finishing in 5th place out of 12. With three scores counting out of four, it was Ian Ross (74), Ian Guthrie (77) and John McLaren (78) who topped the four Clackmannanshire entries with an aggregate of 229 Alva a recent winner of the event finished a shot behind on 230, Tillicoultry a bit further back on 245, and sadly with more than one NR, the good work done by two of the Braehead team (scoring 72 and74) was all in vain. Regretfully there were no teams forward from Dollar and Tulliallan.

Winners of the 2014 event were Glenbervie Golf Club scoring 221. The first winners in 1914 were Falkirk Tryst over their home course, 110 years later they could only manage third place.

CENTRAL SCOTLAND SENIORS Played over 36 holes at Glenbervie Golf course last week, local Mike Rust (Tillicoultry) was the best local player scoring 151 (76,75) and finishing 6 shots behind the winner. Bob Stewart (Tulliallan) finished 4 shots further back on 155 (75,80) Juvenile football Parents and coaches of Alva Swifts U15’s congratulate the boys on a fantastic FVFDA League and CIS Cup double for season 2013/14.

Alva’s season got off to a tough start as the team went through some pre-season transition and the FVFDA league also got far more competitive. However, only one draw and no league defeats until Christmas found Alva sitting in a strong position for another assault on the league title in the New Year.

A tough draw in the Scottish Cup saw Alva lose to eventual Semi-Finalists but FVFDA Cup matters were more successful with Alva losing out in the Semi-Final of League Cup and Winning the CIS Safety Cup.

After the league resumed in the New Year it was tough game after tough game. Alva had to take a few on the chin and re-focus only on their next game. This approach culminated in the eventual league decider on 28th May between Alva Swifts and the only other league contenders, Tullibody Community Club U15’s.

Dull, dreich conditions at Lornshill Academy were the setting as Alva and Tullibody met for a final winner takes all face-off that would decide the destination of the FVFDA U15’s League title. Alva got off to a blazing start and overwhelmed Tullibody in the early stages, carrying a 3-0 lead into the second half. Tullibody re-grouped at half-time and responded instantly with two quick goals to reduce Alva’s lead to 3-2. However, Alva held off some more strong pressure from Tullibody and re-grouped to hit Tullibody with another two goals and kill the game with a 5-2 win.

A 4-0 win over Cowie United in their next game saw Alva Swifts win the FVFDA U15’s League title and achieve a fantastic 3 titles in a row, a feat only accomplished by one other team in FVFDA history.

Alva has just ended training for a well-earned summer rest and would like to thank all parents and residents of Alva for their fantastic support and encouragement over the season. Alva Swifts Youth Football Club thank all parents and residents involved with all our teams and encourage and welcome any volunteers that are willing to help and support the running of our teams and club.

Congratulations Alva Swifts U15’s on a fantastic 3 in a row.
