Goal hero Darren Cummings believes the 1-0 win over Musselburgh at Beechwood Park last weekend was the shot in the arm Sauchie needed to kick start their season.

The striker’s 85th minute strike helped seal a crucial first three points of the season for Fraser Duncan’s men and he reckons they proved a few of their critics wrong with the victory.

The fans’ favourite also believes it was a return to the basics that saw them turn their early season form on its head last weekend.

Cummings told Advertiser sport, “A much needed three points for us and it was all about getting a result on Saturday to get our season up and running so we weren’t too bothered about the performance. We left it late but we got there in the end.

“We switched back to a 4-4-2 and that suited us because everyone knew their jobs which helped us to keep things simple. When you concede 10 goals in two games you have to get back to basics and I think we did that.

“We weren’t expecting to get anything from the first two games but we were disappointed not to be more competitive and after two heavy losses we just had to hit the reset button and take the Musselburgh game as our season beginning. These are the types of games we need to be winning this season.

“The manner of the display against Bo’ness was most disappointing so it was nice to go and put that right on Saturday with a solid display. Hopefully we have proven a point and answered a few of our critics.” The Wee County side’s top scorer from last term was delighted to get himself off the mark but paid tribute to strike partner Callum Hendrie for laying on the goal.

Cummings also admits the whole club has got a lift from the return of Collin Samuel who has re-signed on a short term deal.

He said, “Sammy coming back gave us all a massive lift and just to see him walk through the door was a huge boost especially for the younger players.

“I get a lift from him being in the team as well because you want to be playing with quality players around you and for however long we have him this season he will be a massive help to our cause.

“It was a great feeling to get off the mark for the season but I was more pleased for Callum Hendrie getting the assist. It’s usually the other way about but I was chuffed for him because the assist was a reward for all his hard work and I can see us doing well together this season with a run of games.” The popular striker now hopes Sauchie can kick on as they prepare to face a daunting trip to face an in-form Kelty Hearts and he hopes they can go and prove that they are not a bottom half team like the bookmakers have suggested.

Cummings added, “The win last week has given us massive confidence going into this one and now we want to go and show what we can do and prove that there is no danger we will be involved in a relegation battle this season because we are too good a team for that. Fraser is too good a manager to let that happen and we have a good squad of boys.

“The Kelty game cannot come quick enough for us now but we know it will be a tough one.”
