Sauchie hitman Calum Hendrie says the whole squad are itching to get back to action after being sidelined because of the weather for the past few weeks.

Gaffer Fraser Duncan has used the break in play to bring in two strikers in Iain Diack and the returning Collin Samuel, but the former Motherwell striker welcomes the competition for places and reckons it is exactly what the team needs.

Hendrie told Advertiser sport: “I am not worried about the addition of two extra strikers because I know it will help push the team on. We have been crying out for a bit of competition in the forward area to be honest. From my own point of view, I will just keep my head down, work hard and wait for my chance.

“When that comes around I will make sure I am ready to take it. Our aim at the start of the season was to break into the top six and we just weren’t going to do that with only two strikers so Sammy and Iain coming in provides that depth to the squad.

“We have had a few weeks off now since our last game and it has been frustrating for us so everyone is just desperate to get back playing now. It has been the through in the West league as well they have had two games in last six weeks, but hopefully we are through the worst of the weather now and we can get back to the football.

“ Everyone is desperate to get back to it and put right our last two results. It is important we find a level of consistency that can push us on in the league.” The Clackmannanshire outfit will try for a second time to play the scheduled clash away to relegation-threatened Carnoustie this weekend and Hendrie says it is the ideal game to relaunch their quest for a top six finish in the league this season.

He said: “Carnoustie is always a tough game and the bus journey is even tougher! When you play away at grounds like that it is always going to be difficult and it is made even tougher when they are fighting for their lives at the bottom of the table.

“They will be desperate to get points on the board, but we need to look at it as a chance to win ourselves and a we know a win in this type of game could be just what we need to kick on again in the league.” The 23-year-old hitman has had a tough first half of the season on the goalscoring front, but he believes that one goal is all he needs to set him off on a run.

Hendrie added: “It has been a horrible season for me so far in front of goal, but I am determined to put it right. It has been disappointing and a bit stop-start in terms of getting in the team, but I am confident that once I get one then the goals will start coming again. Every striker goes through these kind of spells, but it is just frustrating in the meantime.”
