Sauchie boss Fraser Duncan says he is in favour of the current proposals for league reconstruction that would see the creation of a new 14-team Scottish Super League.

The SJFA have held meetings in the last few weeks for discussions on the new system that would see the new league combine the top seven team from both the East and the West Super Leagues merge into one.

The prospect of facing the likes of Auchinleck Talbot, Irvine Meadow and Pollok is one that the Beechwood Park gaffer would relish and he believes it would benefit not only the club, but the entire junior game in Scotland.

Duncan told Advertiser sport: “The proposals seem to be quite exciting on the face of it, but it depends on how it is implemented. Of course it would be great to have the likes of Auchinleck, Pollok and Irvine Meadow all in the one league with the teams in the East. There would be some great matches and it would bring more fans to Beechwood Park and that can only be a good thing for the Junior game.

“The only slight concern would be the extra travelling for the fans, but then I reckon the fans would be quite up for it. From a club point of view, it would be brilliant to attract bigger crowds, have these huge games to look forward to week in and week out and it would also allow us to attract more players to the club.

“We would be desperate to be in that top league if its to happen, but of course it also makes it much more difficult to compete. We would of course rather be in there battling among the big boys though so it would definitely something I would back. Even if they go ahead with it for two seasons down the line it would mean we would have to finish in the top seven in the league and it automatically makes next year’s league even more exciting.” Duncan has revealed that they are taking nothing to chance when it comes to their weekend fixture and they have made a back up plan to face Broxburn if their current away trip to face Carnoustie falls foul of the weather once again.

The 31-year-old has also received a boost ahead of the game with the return of Collin Samuel as well as the news that Danny Ashe has shaken off a hamstring injury.

He said: “We are hopeful that the Carnoustie game will go ahead so we can get that one done and dusted, but if the game is off and Broxburn’s game with Hill of Beath is also off then we have arranged to go to Broxburn to play our away league fixture there instead against them.

“It has made our preparation more difficult this week though because we have to be ready for both eventualities.

“Collin Samuel has officially re-signed for the club till the end of the season so that is a good boost for us to have him in the squad for the game. Danny Ashe is also fit and raring to go after his recovery from a hamstring injury so that is another real lift for us to have him back.” The Sauchie boss admits he is still in the market for a new centre half after the departure of Jon Tully to East Stirling, but he is hopeful that his replacement may already be at the club.

Duncan added: “I am still hopeful of bringing in another centre half because I feel that is an area we need to cover.

“Ally Burns is continuing to progress and has taken massive steps in the last few weeks. If he can continue on that road then I hope we might see him back in a Sauchie jersey by the end of February.

“It may turn out that Ally will be the centre half I am needing to fill that spot.”
