Alloa RFC 1st XV…………………………………………. 30

Aberdeen Wanderers RFC 1st XV……………………...…. 7

BT Caledonia League, Division 1

ALLOA bounced back from two defeats on the road to score a comprehensive win over Aberdeen Wanderers at Earlsfield.

Patience and control of the ball served Alloa well in the first quarter where they scored three unanswered tries.

Rab Truedale put through an inch perfect kick and full back Alan Keir slid, collected and got back to his feet before crossing for the opening try.

A Daniel Murrell interception from deep in his own half gave Alloa the field position for the second score, Matt Pope finding the final gap in the Wanderers defence.

Pope also had a hand in the third try when he was on hand to give the scoring pass to Lee Cairney wide on the left as Alloa threatened to run away with the match.

However, Wanderers had shown in glimpses that they carried a threat and a delicate chip in midfield followed by a favourable bounce gave their centre a clear run in to the line.

The half ended with Alloa defending their line furiously against wave after wave of attacks by the Wanderers pack. The home side held firm, giving a half time score of Alloa 15-7 Aberdeen.

It was clear that the first try of the second half would be crucial and it came through brilliant handling by Alloa that stretched Wanderers wide right and then a sweeping move from the backs saw Lee Cairney go over in the left corner for the bonus point.

In truth, Alloa pretty much dominated the remainder of the half and Martin McKenzie found himself in some space in broken play and the stand-in skipper for the day outpaced a tiring Wanderers defence.

The final score came from a neat chip by McKenzie and again Alan Keir showed great heart and timing to get the touchdown ahead of a hesitant Wanderers back three.

Jim Gove, club vice president, said: "It was important we got a victory today to hopefully start to re-build momentum.

"We have league two fixtures before the November break where realistically we need to win both to keep pressure on Caithness and Strathmore starting with Harris at Elliot Road on Saturday."
