SAUCHIE star Anthony McTaggart revealed he has set his sights on returning to action before the end of the season as he continues his recovery from injury.

The midfielder has been plagued by a back problem and his side have struggled in his absence, slipping into the Super League relegation battle.

The youngster admitted it has been hard to watch his team-mates battle without him and he is hoping he can play a part in their final two league games of the season.

McTaggart told Advertiser Sport: “The injury is getting better now. I have been going to a chiropractor so it is getting there but I don’t know if I’ll be able to play again this season. I might make it back for the last couple of games, even if I only manage ten minutes or so. I’ve got my fingers crossed because it has been frustrating, especially as I was playing so well before I got injured.

“It is difficult watching the boys just now, knowing that they are struggling, and it’s not nice to see them not picking up points. The boys have been doing all they can to try and get points on the board and make sure we are safe but it hasn’t happened so far.”

McTaggart admitted that Sauchie are in danger of falling out of the Super League but says there is no reason why they can’t take something from Saturday’s game against Linlithgow Rose.

He said: “We are in major trouble. Teams have a lot of games in hand on us so if they win those we could be looking at a playoff spot. But if we can get six points from our last two games, hopefully that is enough and we will be safe after that. It will be hard but there is no reason why the boys can’t do it if they stick together and work hard for each other.

“There are not many tougher games but we beat them last year in the semi-final of the cup. If we put that kind of performance we have every chance of getting a result.”

The midfield maestro, who recently signed on to stay at Beechwood Park beyond the summer, says Sauchie are just looking forward to the end of the season and believes they are determined to come back stronger in 2016/17.

McTaggart added: “The season has been a bit of a disaster to be honest. We started really well by beating Bo’ness and there were a lot of high points, but it has turned into a disaster. The main thing now is that we stay up and rebuild for next year. We need to pick ourselves up. We know it hasn’t been acceptable and we will work hard to come back stronger.”
