SAUCHIE star Mark Sharp was delighted with his side's performance as they held the Super League's early pacesetters Penicuik to a hard-fought draw last Saturday.

The home side had won their first four games of the season while Sharp and his team-mates had picked up just one victory.

But a fine defensive display saw the Juniors come away from Midlothian with a point and a clean sheet.

And despite going into the game as underdogs, the defender reckons his side had their chances to win the game.

Sharp told Advertiser Sport: "We went there and put in a good performance. There were times where we could have won the game but looking back, the draw was probably fair.

"They won their first four games while we had a bit of a mixed bag, but it goes to show how well we can play if we are at it.

"It was important for us to get a result after the last two games. The matches against Lochee and Camelon weren't a fair reflection of where we are as a team; we conceded soft goals, didn't take our chances and generally didn't play well.

"Conceding eight goals in two games isn't good enough so it was vital that we got a response to that.

"Keeping clean sheets is always nice as a defender. Not giving teams a head start makes a massive difference. If you are wanting to win games you can't give away cheap goals so we are really pleased with that.

"We thought we would kick on and get a few more points on the board after the Bo'ness game but we didn't really get going in the two games after.

"Hopefully this time we can take advantage of a good result and start climbing the table."

Although his favoured position is at right-back, Sharp has impressed as an emergency centre-back in recent weeks and says he is happy to continue playing there as long as manager Fraser Duncan is pleased with his performances.

He said: "I'm just happy to be playing – I don't really mind where. I've enjoyed playing at centre-back and I feel comfortable there, and I hope the manager thinks I've done a good job.

"It's his call, and if he wants me to keep playing there I'm more than happy to. I don't see why I can't play there more in the future."

Sauchie go into Saturday's tie with Broxburn hoping to build on last weekend's result, and Sharp urged his side to be more consistent as they look to climb the Super League table.

He added: "We know it will be another tough game. Broxburn are a good Super League side but we have a good platform to build on after Saturday.

"Hopefully we can go and get the three points and start climbing the table. We need to kick on and start finding a bit of consistency."
