SAUCHIE star Ant McTaggart says he fancies them to beat whoever they come up against after their unbeaten run continued last Saturday.

The Wee County side have boosted their Super League survival hopes by going unbeaten since November, and McTaggart believes things are looking up for the club.

The midfielder reckons they will stand themselves in good stead for next season if they can consolidate their place in mid-table between now and the end of the current campaign.

McTaggart told Advertiser Sport: “I fancy us against anyone at the minute and that’s because we’ve got a settled team now.

"There is still a lot of football to be played but at the minute it’s looking quite likely that we’ll stay up, so it’s pretty promising for next season.

“Between now and the end of the season we have got to just continue picking up as many points as we can and work our way up the league.

"Finishing as high as we can would give the supporters something to get behind. Hopefully it’s not a relegation battle.

“Finishing mid-table in our first season back in the division would be a really good achievement, especially considering the start we had.

"It would give us a really good platform to build on for next season. Hopefully we can do that and then kick on from there in the summer.”

McTaggart thought he had handed Sauchie an impressive victory against Broxburn Athletic last Saturday, only for the West Lothian side to make it 4-4 with the last kick of the ball.

He said: “We were gutted because I thought we were the better team on Saturday. We played well for the whole game and managed to get ourselves in the lead three times.

"We did well and although there were a couple of goals we could maybe have done better with, we win as a team and lose as a team."

He added: "That’s only my second goal of the season and to be honest it’s an area I’d like to improve. I want to add more goals to my game but as long as the team is doing well you have got to be happy with that. But it’s always nice to get yourself a goal.”

The midfielder reckons the Beechwood Park side will get back to winning ways when they host East Super League giants Linlithgow Rose this weekend if the squad can translate their team spirit into a good performance.

McTaggart added: “We played Linlithgow through at their place and played well – we only lost to a late goal.

"The boys are really looking forward to the game and there’s a real buzz about the place at the minute.

"Hopefully, we can take that into the game and pick up another good result.”
