THE squad is very upbeat after Saturday’s league victory against East Fife made it an unbeaten start to the league season.
It was another high scoring game, after the opening day 3-3 draw away to Livingston, and we showed great spirit to come from behind and take the three points.
Both teams enjoyed plenty of possession and it was a very open and attacking game, which was exciting to play in, and must have been exciting for the fans to watch.
Defensively it wasn’t very pleasing to lose two goals though, and we will work hard to tighten things up at the back, but it was great to get the three points. Our players have a never say die spirit and that should hopefully help us as the season progresses.
We certainly showed more determination than Scotland did last midweek in their friendly defeat in Sweden. That was a terrible performance.
There is no question the team suffered from having a number of key players out injured. If we want to have a chance of doing well in the upcoming Euro 2012 qualifying games, we will need Allan Hutton, Andy Webster and all the other regulars back.
Nobody should blame Craig Levein for the Sweden result. He has to play with what he’s got, and I’m sure the former Dundee United gaffer will have the players well prepared for the qualifiers. I think it would be good if he brought Paul Hartley back into the squad. Some people might say he is the wrong side of 30 but he has proven experience at international level and could be a big player for us.
Next up for the Wasps is Saturday’s game at Stenhousemuir. We expect a hard game against the Warriors but we’ll go there with confidence and do our best to get the three points.
After that we have the glamour league cup tie at home to Aberdeen to look forward to. Once the Stenny game is done and dusted the players will be 100 per cent focused on the Dons game.
The guys will be determined to do their best against John Coughlin’s side as all the players are desperate to show they are good enough to start against Aberdeen.
Games against top flight teams are a one off, and we’ve proved before, like in the game against St Mirren last season in the Scottish Cup, which we eventually lost 3-1, that we can give SPL opposition a run for their money. So we’re confident of making things difficult for the Dons.
Next week, I’ll give you my reaction to the Stenny game and give you my predictions on who I think will be challenging for championships and facing relegation battles in the leagues north and south of the border - apart from Alloa’s division, that could be tempting fate!
