Alloa swimmer Duncan Scott came up just short of qualifying for the Commonwealth Games at the first attempt with a stunning personal display at the Commonwealth Games trials at Tollcross International in Glasgow last weekend.

Duncan’s first event was the 100m Freestyle. The heats on the Friday morning saw him comfortably through to the final that night breaking his entry time.

The sixteen year old swam an incredible race. He was seeded sixteenth and finished 6th overall breaking the British 16 year old age group record in 50.86. He is now ranked in the UK top 12.

Scott along with his coaches Steven Tigg (FIRST) and Elaine Johnston (Strathallan) decided not to swim on the Friday night as the weekend was going to be hard work.

Saturday began with the 200 Individual Medley. His heats finish on Saturday morning had him placed 5th for the final.

Friday afternoon and he was in the pool against Dan Wallace. Dan’s gold medal place made the consideration time for the team.

Duncan picked up silver with another personal best and once again broke his Scottish Age group record. The swim was an agonising 81/100 of a second away from qualifying. He is now ranked top six in the UK this year for the 220IM.

Sunday started with the 200 Freestyle followed by the 400IM. Duncan swam fast enough for both finals.

Sunday night saw Robbie Renwick make the required time for the team, the fastest in the UK this year with 1.47.60 and Duncan came home 5th in 1.50.95, yet again breaking his personal best and now ranking in the UK top 10 for the event.

Back in the water for the gruelling 400 Individual Medley. Again he was up against Florida based Dan Wallace who competed for team GB at the Worlds in Barcelona in 2013. It was Lewis Smith from Stirling University who took gold with Wallace in silver and Ross Muir, also of Stirling in third. All three made the consideration time. Duncan finished in a creditable 4th.

Duncan will be back in Glasgow at the British/English Commonwealth Trials from the 10th-16th of April. There are still Commonwealth places for the Scottish team available to be picked up this week and it is also the meet for selection to the European Juniors.
